R83-08 03-28-83 RESOLUTION NO. R83-8 A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE PASSAGE OF SENATE BILL NO. 606 RELATING TO 9-1-1 EMERGENCY PHONE SYSTEM. WHEREAS, citizens in many communities across the United States are able to obtain emergency assistance by dialing the num- ber 9-1-1; and WHEREAS, this number has been reserved nationwide for emergency purposes; and WHEREAS, some States have adopted legislation mandating each community to set up the 9-1-1 emergency telephone service for its citizens; and WHEREAS, under the 9-1-1 system, a citizen dials 9-1-1 to obtain all kinds of emergency assistance: police, fire, medical, and in some instances, poison control, reporting of child abuse and other emergencies; and WHEREAS, the System greatly reduces the time it takes for a citizen to get in touch with the appropriate agency when in need of emergency assistance; and WHEREAS, the City of Pearland lies partly within the County covered by tho proposed legislation under Senate Bill No. 606. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS: THAT the City Council of the City of Pearland supports the passage of legislation to create a special district by which 9-1-1 telephone number is used by local governments as their pri- mary emergency telephone number as proposed in Senate Bill No. 606.
