The second meeting of the Pearland Library Board was
held Thursday, April 9, 1970 in the Pearland State Bank
Building. The Chairman, Betty Alexander, called the meeting
to order at 7:30 p.m. with the following members present:
Betty Alexander, Herb Carlston, Norma Flory and Nina Sanders.
.Sue Tucker, representing the Foundations Committee,
made the following report: A list of Foundations that could
possibly contribute towards a Library building has been com-
piled. The list numbers over 130, with 51 Houston based. The
initial appeal will be individually typed; a request for
stationery was made and granted.
Government Help Committee. Herb Carlston supplied copies
of letters written to the State Board representative for this
area, Miss Ard, and the County Commissioners, copies of which
are part of the permanent records.
County Commissioner Jordan and Judge Arnold were guests.
Judge Arnold assured the Board the Commissioners Court wishes
to see the Library system grow. Commissioner Jordan assured
us there is a "gentleman's agreement" among the Commissioners
that Pearland will be the next Branch Library opened.
Herb Carlston will write Judge Arnold prior to July 1
makipg a formal request that we be included as a branch library
in the County Budget.for 1971.
Judge Arnold suggested the Pearland Board send representa-
tives to the Public Hearing for the 1971 Budget to be held
around August 15 or 16.

Should Pearland secure facilities to house and furnish
a Library prior to January 1, 1971, Judge Arnold and Commissioner
Jordan both promised that the County would make every effort to
open the Branch Library during this budget year.
Local Contributions Committee. There are approximately
1700 families in Pearland and another 300 in Brookside, making
about 2000 families to draw on for local contributions. The
Committee would like to raise as much money as possible through
social functions, with service clubs sponsoring most of the
functions. On the advice of persons the Committee respects,
a door -to -dor campaign is not contemplated at this time. A
Memorial Fund will be set up and residents will be encouraged
to make contributions directly to the Pearland State Bank.
Publicity. Norma Flory reported her Committee is
ready to assist all other committees with publicity releases.
She would like to have news releases about every two weeks.
A newsletter will also be sent to civic clubs and- organizations
as needed.
The Chairman will contact the Building and Site Com-
mittee about securing temporary quarters so that we may open
a Branch Library as soon as County Funds are available.
