1970-08-20 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESThe sixth regular meeting of the Pearland Community Library
Board was called to order on August 20, 1970 at 7:30 p.m. with the
following members present: Betty Alexander, Norma Flory, Pat
Crawford, Nina Sanders, Herb Carlston, and newly elected president
of the Friends of the Library.Truby Keller.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and corrected
to read "Herb Carlston is still attempting to get Pearland included
in the 1970 County Budget.'
Betty Alexander reported on a meeting between herself and
Mrs. Van Horn. Mrs. Van Horn informed Betty that March 1 would be
the earliest that she could have new books bought and processed
for our Branch. She said that she could not order the books until
after January 1, 1971 and that it would take approximately 5 weeks
to get delivery and another 5 weeks to process the books. She
would like to see us wait until June 1, 1971 to open and promised
9000 books by September, 1971. Mrs. Alexander replied that after
meeting with County officials in April of this year we had leased
a building. Mrs. Van Horn stated that if an earlier datethan
January 1 were chosen to.open it would have to be on a City basis
with vol-,nteer help and the County would furnish between three and
five thousand used books.
Mrs. Van Horn also stated that we would hire our Librarian
and has had some inquiries from interested persons. The Board
does not wish to be excluded in the hiring of personnel.
As the County will be unable to furnish a reference library
before March, 1971, Betty Alexander will contact the State Library
Board to see if we might borrow reference books from them.
Plans were made for as many Board Members as possible to
attend the County Budget hearing at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24;
and later to see Mrs. Van Horn.
Herb Carlston reported on additional prices and lines of
furniture that he had investigated. He reported a metal line of
furniture that would run $4400. for wall shelving, card catalog,
4 tables, childs' table and 20 chairs. Additional prices and shelving
requirements, as worked out by Jack McGuff and Herb Carlston, are
attached.

Nina Sanders told the Board of her -resignation as Chairman
of Local Contributions Committee with the recommendation that the
