1985-11-19 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPearland Library Board Minutes Tuesday, November 19, 1985, 7:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Rosalie Olah, with the following present: Bettye Alexander, Faye Hunter, Nancy Sallee, Judy Demecs, Mayor Tom Reid, County Librarian John Moorman, Dede Williams. Absent were Bob Shagrin and Harold Travis. Minutes of the September 17th meeting were read and approved as read, but John noted that the Rotary Club did not pick up books remaining from the book sale as planned. The county precinct took the books instead. Nancy Sallee reported that $50.00 will be spent for the upcoming program on osteoporosis, leaving a balance of $111.31 in the checking account. Nancy has two checks to deposit from the copying machine. To the savings account balance of $66.82'was added interest of $.93, making a balance of $67.75. In the County Librarian's report, John commented on the statistical report for October, showing that the county has surpassed 750,000 circulation and that Pearland has shown a 25% circulation increase over a year ago, and has had a 4,400 volume increase this year. Alvin's circulation did not increase because of an economic set -back in the area. Proceeds from the book sale held in October in Pearland were approximately $852.00 and will be used mainly in two areas: for annual awards for the Christmas luncheon, and as a supplement to the graphics program, from which all the county libraries will benefit via needed flyers, announcements, bookmarks, etc. The commissioners' court has approved the budget for 1986, which did include an hourly increase across the board for employees but no new personnel for Pearland. John said he will again request increased personnel in the 1987 budget. The system is working with two school districts to convert the holdings of the school districts to machine-readable format, and out of this will come a union catalog. This will be helpful to teachers and others, and the uniqueness of the liaison with school districts makes the chance of being funded by federal funds under title money a possibility. John further reported that the BCLS business office has an IBM personal computer now and is hopeful of putting records on it as soon as possible, which will assist in keeping better records of transactions, etc. Dede reported that there was leaking along the library wall on Liberty Drive during the recent driving rain. Mr. Stone of Stone Construction Company and also the architect have been by co inspect the damage and reported there is a crack in the grouting, which they expect to cover with a shield. The carpet is to be cleaned, but this will be done after the wall problem is resolved. There is to be a Christmas puppet show on December 9th at 12:00, Dede said. Furthermore, she is making plans for the sesquicentennial year. The amount Pearland Library Board Minutes (Continued) November 19, 1985 of $428.00 has been received from the Hill Kemp Capitol Scholar Fund for Texas materials for the library. Dede has heard about Texidillo, a person who would visit the library dressed as an armadillo, and is considering using him to kick off the sesquicentennial celebration. Other ideas being considered for the year include asking area celebrities how a favorite book affected them and a read-a-thon book program for adults. Dede appealed for Texana materials for the exhibit case. Mayor Tom Reid will consider displaying his fossil and minerals collection. Dede said all of the children's books ordered with the Friends' donations have been r:ceived, with part of the book money having been spent at a wholesale house called Educators. She further reported there has been good response to programs offered by the library, including Catherine Foster, author of Ghosts Alon the Brazos, a color -analysis program, and investment seminars. The library has a new CETA 15 -hour worker. Rosalie asked Tom to address the issue of a full-time custodian needed for the library. Dede explained the custodial needs of our building and John compared how many workers are needed to keep the county library clean, and how the county pays for them. Tom said it is the intent of the council to keep up our property and he will investigate what can be done and report back. The Mayor reported on the design of the city hall that is will be a very attractive building and will match this building architecturally, having an atrium and a covered walkway to the library and Parks and Recreation Building. Rosalie brought up the problem of a member who has not attended, Bob Shagrin, and who is thought to have moved from the area. The Mayor will check on his re -appointment date, and if it is the coming February, Bob will not be re -appointed. Tom said we need to check with Harold Travis to see if present commitments keep him from attending the board meetings. Nancy was told by a lady at the book sale that she would like to donate a picture she has done to the library, and John told her to check with the board as to our guidelines for accepting art. Dede said when we discussed donations before we thought best not to accept such because many artists in the area would like to have their work included. John suggested the board will need to adopt a policy for art donations, and the board agreed to stick to the original decision to decline art gifts so as not to offend. Bettye suggested we might use the atrium to display art works for special display periods, and John suggested we could have a loan program whereby patrons could check out art works. Dede has been approached by a religious group wanting to use the meeting room every Sunday and in keeping with the use guidelines has turned them down. She took the board through the library to see the location of the leak, and the Sesquicentennial picture, which has been framed. 3. Pearland Library Board Minutes (Continued) November 19, 1985 The next board meeting will be held in January. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, r sf of! ` Ism-f ice'_)` i ,-.
