1986-03-18 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPearland Library Board ._minutes
March 18, 1986 7:30 P.M.
Rosalie opened the meeting with the invocation. Present were County Assistant
Director Steve Brown, Bettye Alexander, Fay Hunter, Dede Williams, and Judy Demecs.
Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as read.
Dede suggested we check to see that the Mayor and Dennis Frauenberger are receiving
notices of meetings, and Rosalie will ask that it be done.
There was no treasurer's report in Nancy's absence, but Dedereported the library
still receives the check from the copy machine. The glass on the machine broke
recently while being used but was replaced by the company.
In the Librarian's report, Dede said she has spoken to Dennis about the money
from the Rotary Club for the periodical index, and the club plans to pay for this
in 1986 (approximately $2,000.00 per year). In the future, the Rotary does not
wish to be committed to a long-term project. Dennis has officially donated the
rental typewriter to the library; it was previously on loan. The proceeds from
the rental of the typewriter now are used for repairs and for binding of the
Pearland Journal, and the board approved continuance of the rental proceeds for
the same needs. Our library has received a television and video recorder.from
the Brazoria System which will be shared with Manvel and Alvin Libraries on occasion.
Dede asked whether these might be loaned to the Parks and Recreation Dept. for
use in meetings, and Steve thought this was permissible as long as the components
are not loaned bo individuals, but to groups. (These are not portable.) Dede
further reported that programs in March feature photography and IRA investment.
April programs will be on Texas wildflowers, Texas heroes, and state birds. Every
library in the county will have a program on child abuse and ours will be on April
15th. In May, Dede has scheduled a program on how to write resumes and has talked
to prospective speakers about the topic of retirement plans. The first children's
program for this summer is June 2nd, a drama called Lone Star Hotel. Dede said
Mr. Duncan, an AARP volunteer who has been helping people with their taxes, has
been very busy. Nancy Sallee's collection of cloisonne is in the display case.
The regular custodian has been absent due to surgery and a cleaning service has
come three times weekly. However, Dede still feels the need for a full-time cus-
todian. Dede plans to rent a trailer sign for announcing April programs. She
spoke to Lynn Ogle about the Friends' getting someone to speak for a membership
drive in the fall, and Lynn said she will contact someone such as Doug Johnson
or Ron Stone. A board will be posted in the library on which people will be urged
to sign up if interested in joining the Friends. The carpet will be cleaned over
Easter. Work has been done around the windows to prevent leakage such as occurred
previously in the bad rains.
Steve passed out the monthly statistics report, showing a steady increase in
Pearland's circulation. He said West Columbia has the slab poured for their new
library and that framing has been done and the library may open near June 1st.

The West Columbia Library building will also house the community center. Steve
further reported that Lake Jackson has a new librarian. Steve is working with
the Brazosport and Angleton School Districts on a proposal to cooperatively con-
vert all the catalog card records to machine readable form on the computer.
Should this plan receive funding, Steve looks forward to expansion of the program
to other districts later. He reported that six smallest libraries in the county
have added a half-time clerical staff member recently.
Dede submitted to the group a list of persons whom she would recommend as
prospective board members. The list has been given to the Mayor.
The next board meeting will be held in June.
Respectfully submitted,
