1986-11-18 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESMINUTES OF PEARLAND LbRARY BOARD
November 18, 1986, 7:30 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by Rosalie Olah with the following present:
Steve Brown, Rosalie, Mayor Tom Reid, Dave Beckman, Ed Fondren, Bettye Alexander,
Faye Hunter, Dede Williams, and Judy Demecs. Minutes were read and approved.
The Mayor reported first since he had another meetingywith the good news that
Council had met to determine how to disperse revenue sharing funds and had
funded the full amount for the McNaughton Plan ($7,000.00). The Council passed
this easily, The Mayor said a comment at the meeting was that it is important
for the city to uphold our part of the library expenses since the county cannot
carry the full load. Tom said new city offices should be completed in about
May or June and should result in access to more parking space for library patrons.
Steve Brown reported that the county budget has passed since we last met.
Overall, the county budget is 1.957. lower than that of 1986, but this is less of
a drop than for most areas. $1,240,605.00 is budgeted for the library fund.
There will be about a 12% drop in the 1987 book budget but this should not result
in a marked decrease in booksavailable, Steve said, if this drop remains true for
only one year. He urged us to work with county commissioners to urge importance
of library needs.
Statistics show the county will pass the 900,000 circulation figure before the
end of the year. Steve commented that staff and good book collections are neces-
sary for this result. He will call a meeting on January 17th of the Friends
Council, representative of various Friends groups around the county. The purpose
of this meeting shall be for exchange of successful ideas and for members to
become acquainted. Steve expressed the hope that Pearland would have two repre-
sentatives.
No date has been set for the county book fair, since the mall manager wants to
set the date after January 1st. Steve hopes the sale will be for two weeks prior
to Easter.
Dede reported and commented on the circulation statistics that more and more
college and high school students are using the library, which she attributes to
a better reference section and the fact that over 100 periodicals are subscribed
to. Dede reported that adult programs varied in attendance. Programs on Christmas
crafts, dyslexia, and microwave cooking were well attended and Dede feels the
geneology program should be repeated next year. Ron Stone's program was sparsely
attended, but Dede said he was very personable, speaking on Sam Houston. The
Friends raised between $300 and $400. A February meeting is planned to elect new
officers.
The display case in the library now has winning displays from the Brazoria County
Fair, provided by the Pearland Home Extension Club. After the first of the year
a private collection of bells will be displayed. A motion was made, seconded, and
passed to pay Texas Library Association dues of $38.00 for the coming year for
Dede's 1987 membership.
MINUTES OF PEARLAND BRARY BOARD (Cont.)
November 18, 1986
Under old business the construction of a library sign in front of the building
was discussed. It was suggested that the construction company doing the work
for the city building might look at the design for the sign and possibly donate
some leftover materials. Dede will get the previously -made design for the sign.
Also, Dede plans to see about having a ramp made near the front steps, as the
present ramp is far from the front of the building.
The next meeting will be in January. Motion was made and seconded and passed
that the meeting adjourn.
Respectfully submitted,
