1987-11-17 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MINUTES OF PEARLAND LIB._dRY BOARD
November 17, 1987 7:30 P.M.
The meeting was opened with an invocation by Rosalie Olah, chairman. In attendance
were Bettye Alexander, Dave Beckman, Nancy Sallee, Steve Brown, Dede Williams, and
Judy Demecs.
Corrections to the minutes were made so that Dede's portion would read "Assistant
County Manager is working with Parks and Recreation Dept." and on page two, the
last paragraph would read "laser disc" instead of floppy disc.
Nancy reported that the balance in the account remains at $249.67.
Dede said plans for Children's Book Week include No No the Clown and story-teller
Jeanine Beekman. The literacy group is going ahead with its work. Five tutors
are now using the library and more are anticipated after the first of the year.
Dede reported the Christmas crafts program had about 50 in attendance, but the
cancer information program had to be cancelled.
The CITA program is out of funds and will no longer provide assistance to our
library after December 1st, but Dede reported that STEP (Senior Texas Employee
Program) has been used by Alvin and she is investigating this. She showed board
members areas in the library where water came in during the severe weather on
November 16th. Dede is having this investigated.
There have been some problems over the use of the meeting room recently, and Dede
suggested we review the policy guidelines. All agreed that the policy reflects the
best interests of the library.
Nancy made the motion that the board pay Dede's Texas Library Association dues in
the amount of $38.00. Motion carried.
Steve reported that we have a new Assistant County Director, Bill Hord. He has
visited Pearland Library sometime ago and will come again soon. The grant program
to create a union catalog is going well. Brazosport School District is going to
furnish the 4th cataloging station and power to operate it. Steve said that since
the grant application is going well he will contact school districts to encourage
participation. Books (40-45 books) for the school book depository have arrived
in the Lake Jackson Library, and Steve suggested we might consider talking to
Pearland Ind. School District about providing this plan to Pearland. In this program,
core texts would be on reserve in the library for use of students or parents.
Steve received a check for the BCLS Foundation in the amount of $75,000. from Amoco.
Steve will increase work on the BCLS in the future. The application for a grant
for the literacy group was turned in on November 16th. There were two sources of
funds, so applications were turned in to both. Steve feels confident that we will
