1988-01-19 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESMINUTES OF PEARLAND LI. RY BOARD
January 19, 1988 7:30 P.M.
Mayor Tom Reid gave the invocation to open the meeting with Dave Beckman, Ed Fondren,
Dede Williams, Fay Hunter, Rosalie Olah, Bettye Alexander, and Judy Demecs present.
Steve had corrections to the minutes as to the amount and donor of a check to the
BCLS Foundation, reported in the November minutes. The amount of the check was
$7,500.00 and the donor was Dow, not Amoco.
Dede gave the treasurer's report, in Nancy's absences as a balance of $249.67 with
$38.00 having been taken out for Dede's TLA annual dues, leaving $211.67 balance.
Steve said the statistical report will be available soon.
Dede reported that information about a library card campaign has been in the newspaper.
The campaign is designed to encourage families to get library cards for their children,
and is in connection with ALA. Letters have been sent to area teachers to make them
aware of the program. The contest "Why I Love My Library Card" is being conducted
in February. Dede reported that there will be library "coupons" in the newspaper,
probably near National Library Week, offering free replacement of lost library cards
or to cancel fines.
There will be some spring programs for adults. "IRAs and the New Tax Laws" is
planned for February and Dede will see about getting Rosalyn Cogburn to speak
near National Library Week. Money from rental of the library typewriter has previously
been used to bind the Pearland Library Journal, but Dede wanted to know if the
money might be put into the Library Board account. The motion was made by Bettye and
was passed to do that. Two new library employe s are Cherish Holden and Jenny
Satterwhite.
There will be a joint Harris County and Brazoria County Librarians' meeting in
March. Dede further reported that she has sent a letter to businesses in Pearland
asking for donations and asking permission to call in person if no respon3a is
received. Dede asked if the board would like to give a status report to City
Council in the spring, at Tom's recommendation. March would be a good time for
this. It was decided that March 28th would be the date we will go to Council.
In Steve's report, he said regarding the status of the application for a grant
for the literacy group that in excess of $9800.00 funding has been recommended and
this will be voted on the 20th, the day following this meeting, at the Houston
Public Library annual system meeting. The money will help provide training and
materials fo+_ .iew tutors. There was a county -wide meeting of people interested
in a literary program, and these persons want an umbrella group to provide coor-
dination of older groups with newer literacy groups.
MINUTES OF PEARLAND BOARD (CONT.)
January 19, 1988
Steve said that Nolan Ryan had called the Alvin Library and said he would donate
a copy of the World Book Encyclopedia to the library. A copy had just been ordered
and this order was cancelled. The tentative weekend planned for the County Book
Sale is April.15th through the 17th at the Brazos Mall, at which time other mall
activities have been planned to attract a crowd.
Steve spoke about the ongoing catalog project in that it is about 207. complete
with conversion to electronically readible form. Six from this area went to
San Antonio to review various computeroreadible systems and now know which systems
are preferred. About a week ago the Alvin Community College agreed to join the
catalog union project for the next year. Steve hopes the catalog will be available
in libraries by September. It will begin with records on about 350,000 books.
Steve congratulated Dede on doing a good job during a year when funding was at a
minimum.
Dede reported that the library sign has been here just a few days. It is attractive.
Judy asked Dede what school librarians can do to aid in the program of getting
library cards into the hands of children. Dede suggested a contest between classes
to see which classes have children all acquire cards. This plan would not penalize
those who already have a card.. The important thing is to inform the classes that
the cards are free and can be easily obtained.
Tom asked if there is a way of planning to reserve space near the Countryplace
and Southdown subdivisions for another library for the future. This was discussed.
The bookmobile now furnishes books for these areas.
Meeting adjourned.
