1988-10-18 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPearland Library Board I rtes October 18, 1988 7:30 P.M. Rosalie Olah opened the meeting with the following in attendance: Fay Hunter, Ed Fondren, Nancy Sallee, Dede Williams, Bettye Alexander, and Judy Demecs. The minutes were read and a correction was made in the June minutes so that they would read "the book budget for the county is $212,500.00 ---more than last year." Nancy reported that the balance of $308.73 remains the same. Dede brought the statistical reports for June and August, commenting that the expected hurricane (Gilbert) resulted in the library's being closed three days with a commensurate drop in circulation. However, circulation was really up for the summer. Dede said the library now has 32,000 volumes and she will begin to plan for more shelf space. Fay suggested we prepare council for the fact that additional shelving will be requested in about a year. Dede reported that Billie Garrison did a great job on the summer reading club, and showed a newspaper article about the summer activities. Most of the local talent was donated. Dede said the requested library budget did pass with the McNaughton lease plan having been included as part of the regular city budget. There is a new employee from Alvin, Jane Brandon. A handout was circulated describing the fall programs. Two programs of flower arranging and entertaining were well -attended. Steve Brown was unable to attend this meeting due to another meeting in the county, but Dede reported that the Adult Reading Center has received a grant for materials which began on October 1st. Statistics will be kept on this. Dede passed out copies of a memo to the City about the library telephone line. She is going to find out if the 485-4876 number can be tied to other lines; she would like to keep this number because people are used to it. Also, she will ascertain what would be required to have an extension phone placed in the reference area. The next regular meeting will be November 15th. Bettye made a motion that the board pay Dede's TLA annual duel in the amount of $38.00. Motion carried. Ed reported that he talked to Richard Tetens and that Richard will be happy to serve as liaison between the board and city council. Ed will talk to Mayor Tom Reid about appointing Richard in this capacity. TLA will sponsor another legislative day in Austin on February 15th, as has been done every two years. Persons interested in libraries can meet senators and representatives to discuss needs of libraries. Bettye thinks this has been of great help in the past. Fay said Freeport has received $23,000.00 grant for books in Spanish and Sweeny has received a grant for large -print books. She suggested we try for a large -print grant, especially since senior citizens meet twice a week in the community room adjacent to the library. Respectfully submitted, dy De ecs, Secretary J Rosalie Olah, Chairwoman
