1989-01-17 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPearland Library Board M__jtes January 17, 1989 7:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Rosalie Olah with the following in attendance: Bettye Alexander, Richard Tetens, Ed Fondren, Dave Beckman, Dede Williams, Steve Brown, and Judy Demecs. Minutes of the previous meeting will be approved at the March meeting, as the copy of that meeting was missing. Judy briefly reviewed high- lights of that meeting. Balance of the treasury is $270.73 with $38.00 having been expended for TLA dues for this year. Dede showed the statistical report, noting that circulation is up for the year a little more than 5%. She reported that a bird slide show about birds of our area will be an upcoming library program and that tax counseling will be featured again. A genealogy workshop will be held in February and there will be two spring gardening programs. Dede asked if the board would like to have Roslyn Cogburn during National Library Week. Bettye made the motion that she be invited to speak and that the $150.00 fee would be paid by the board. Rosalie seconded the motion and it carried. Dede explained that a slight revision of the library meeting room policy was needed in that the policy needed to state that library programs would take precedence over other types of programs. The room was heavily used in that over 200 programs were held there last year. The board approved this change, which is now reflected in the first sentence of the policy. Dede further reported there is a new part-time employee thru STEP (Senior Texans Employment Program). Dede would like to try to raise money to acquire a computer for the library for which she could order a Wilson Disc for about $1,000.00. The library is now paying $2,000.00/yr. for Magazine Index. Lake Jackson spent about $2,600.00 for computer, printer, monitor, etc. Not all parts would be essential at the beginning, and Dede thought it would be possible to begin with about $1,800.00. Bettye suggested that Rotary Club might be interested in assisting in this since they did assist in getting needed items earlier. Dave said he would speak to Bob Roundtree with IBM. Steve pointed out in regard to the year-end report that Pearland is answering more reference questions than other libraries. He stated that the automated catalog was here in the library and that he was anxious to display it to us following the meeting. In the continuing grant for this year PISD has agreed to participate in lieu of Alvin Community College. In addition to sixteen previous members, four will be added. Dede said she does not have a library plan showing electrical plugs in the floor, so Steve will check to see if he has the plan. Bettye and Steve will plan to talk to Senator Brown and Jack Harris and John Willy at Legislative Day in February. Pearland Library Board Minutes (Cont.) January 17, 1989 2. The only unfinished business concerned the telephone line for the library, and Dede reported that the 485-4876 number comes directly into the library now without going through the city switchboard, doubling the number of phone calls received by the library. The cleaning service is doing well now also. Following the meeting, Steve displayed the capabilities of the new automated catalog which gives access to 350,000 volumes in ten county branches and six school libraries. The library user can select author, title, and subject headings and can hunt items by use of key words. The interlibrary loan function is not yet implemented but later can assist in filling requests for books. Respectfully submitted, Rosalie Olah, Chairperson l Jud Demes, Secretary
