1989-03-21 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MIT ES
March 21, 1989 7:30 P.M.
Rosalie Olah called the meeting to order. Minutes of the October and January
meetings were read and approved as read. Present were Dede Williams, Steve Brown,
Dave Beckman, Richard Tetens, Bettye Alexander, Fay Hunter, Nancy Sallee, and Judy Demecs.
Nancy reported that the balance in the treasury remains the same at $270.73.
Dede reported that Texas Library Assn. Convention will be in Houston, April 11th through
15th at Brown Convention Center. For National Library Week, Roslyn Cogburn will open
our library's activities with a book review of Alaska by Michener on April 10th. Two
programs which are already filled are Quick Stitch Quilting and Country Clothes. Another
program will be done by children's author, James Chappell. Summer reading club plans
have been made, and the programs for children will include ones on endangered species
and origami.
The computer has been out in the public area about a month and there are very few
requests from users for assistance, Dede further reported. Interlibrary loans have
quadrupled since library users know what other libraries have. Dede asked that we
notice the egg exhibit in the foyer which was brought by a friend. January circulation
was up considerably over last year.
Dave talked to Bob Rountree about the possibility of IBM'"s donating computer parts,
and Bob said it is IBM's policy not to donate used equipment, but that Bob will talk
to IBM again.
Steve Brown reported that the large print collection has aided in bringing people into
the library. He pointed out that reference questions in Pearland are the highest number
in the county. It is time to begin planning for county budget requests, and Steve said
if the board has a list of needs to let him, know. He noted that TLA conventions feature
some exhibits and programs especially for library friends and trustees.
Steve stated that the Alvin library Friends group recently asked Monsanto for help with
their library needs. He pointed out that now is a good time to seek financial assis-
tance when automation is available to save much time for library personnel. On the
Braznet catalog developments, Steve reported that he got final approval from the state
to include PISD in the system. The PISD library holdings will begin to be included
about May. The Director of Lamar University has submitted a proposal to combine about
twenty East Texas libraries with others to put up to about 70 the number of libraries
which are on line.
Dave asked Steve to comment on the prognosis for county funding for next year, which
Steve did. Further, Steve suggested that a descriptive packet be made up for donors
about things needed in the library. Under new business, Steve suggested that we really
pursue companies which might assist in computer purchases. Used equipment would also
be welcome. Houston Light and Power, Southwestern Bell, Entex, and Chevron were among
companies suggested. Bettye suggested that a letter to possibly interested parties
might result in assistance if a specific need were named.
Respectfully submitted,
J y De ecs, Secretary Rosalie Olah, Chairman
