Dede reported that the Jaycees donated $240.00 to the library and it has been
spent for books on tape and radio tapes. She has se_zt a proposal to a computer
company and expects to hear from them the cost of 'hardware to support the indexing
system. Compaq serves Houston, and sail they would consider our library for a
donation if we served Houston residents. Dede said that we do serve Houston
residents, since we do not charge for a library card.
Dede passed out statistical reports for October showing that Pearland was second
in county circulation to Lake Jackson, and that we continue to show an iacr'!ase
in circulation. Fall adult programs went well, Dede continued, and space had to
be added for Christmas craft program. Tax forms are beginning to arrive and will
again be available to library patrons. Programs to come in January include a
financial planning workshop and an Australian program.
In the library card campaign, distribution was made of 1100 cards, and Dede felt
that good publicity for the library resulted. A new full-time circulation clerk
has been hired in that Lizette Renteria replaces Jane Brandon. The carpet has been
professionally cleaned and will be included in the annual budget after this. The
Parks and Recreation Dept. has been cooperative in sharing the announcement sign.
Carden Jackson, the new private school, has offered to put up the li'-)rary Christmas
tree and will do this.
Steve said regarding September statistics that the county showed a 6 1/2 % increase
in circulation, while Pearland's increase in circulation was 13.4% for the year.
Circulation total for the county for the fi3cal year will pass the millionth mark
for the first time this year. Steve sail they looked for a way to celebrate the
millionthth=mark, and decided to have a drawing to see which library in the county
would hold the celebration. Pearland was chosen and will be the site of the occasion
early in December. These statistics make Brazoria County 11--)rarj_i3s the tenth
busiest libraries in Texas.
Pearland Library Board Minutes (Cont.)
In the last two weeks Steve acted on a suggestion by Mayor Reid that it is time
to check out possibilities in the Highway 288 area for space for a new library
in the future. A representative of the South Freeway Corridor Association
directed Steve to the manager of Southwyck subdivision, with whom Steve discussed
issues concerning donation of land to be reserved for a library branch in the
future. Since home sites are selling rapidly, it is a good time to discuss
possibilities. Steve and Mayor Reid agreed that this pattern of development
differs from that of a city building a library as usual, because this involved
an unincorporated area and city money cannot be spent outside the city limits.
Steve would like to see the board and city explore possibilities of service to
the area in the interim between now and when such time as the city would expand
to the area. Steve could list some needs for a parcel of land suitable for a
library, and Billy Joe Plaster will be asked to consider possibilities of the
part the county might undertake. Nancy asked if it would be aivisable to contact
individual homeowners of the area. Mayor Reid suggested that he, Steve, and Billy
Joe Plaster meet to discuss possible approaches, and Steve asked that the board
be aware of the needs and open to ideas. Tom pointed out that the potential popu-
lation for the area is 200,000 to 25:O,OOO.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
