1990-01-16 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MIls_SES January 16, 1990 7:30 P.M. Rosalie called the meeting to order with those present: Tom Reid, Ed Fondren, Dede Williams; Nancy Sallee, Fay Hunter, Dave Beckman, and Judy Demecs. Tom gave the invocation. Nancy reported no change in the account balance. Dede pointed out that the statistical report showed Pearland was only slightly behind Lake Jackson in December circulation. This record further indicates the need for more titles for our library. Brazoria County libraries were closed on the snow day, but Pearland's had already opened and stayed open until about 1:00 P.M. A spokesman for Compaq in charge of reviewing applications for grants said their company is just now reviewing applications, so Dede will wait to hear whether we may attain a portion of the cost of hardware to support the indexing system. Dede attained permission from the board to spend the fee to invite Roslyn Cogburn to speak during National Library Week, Monday, April 23rd. Roslyn will review Robert Fulgrum's book All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Aiderican Library Association is having a "Night of 1,000 Stars" to encourage families to share reading time. Celebrities will read at our library on Wed.., April 25th at 7:00 and Mayor Reid has been asked to read. Dede said we may also have Santa Claus. Dede reported that book bags are being sold for $1.00 to make money for recovering chairs for a total cost of about $240.00, and she asked permission to spend some moeny left from computer pur- chase. Spring program plans include an Australian program, landscape lighting, humming birds, crafts, etc. The financial planning program was successful. Dede thanked those who attended the millionth book celebration in our library in early December. Mr. Rich was pleased with the honor of checking out the millionth item to be circulated in the county this year. Dede mentioned the need for more volunteers. There is one regular volunteer per week now. There will be tax assistants in the library through an AARP program from February 6th through April 10th every Tuesday from 10:00 until 2:00. Proper tax forms as promised by the IRS have not as yet been received, however. An application has been sent to Houston Area Library System for a grant to buy large print books, but nothing has been heard on this yet. No county report was given in Steve's absence. Betty will attend a county board meeting next week. Mayor Reid said he will be meeting soon with Billy Joe Plaster and others to explore-. future library needs for the area. He answered some questions from the board about powers of the mud districts. Respectfully submitted, Judy emecs, Secretary Rosalie Olah, Chairman
