Three workers can help for 30 hours each all summer through the Job Training Partnership Act. Circulation statistics were shown to the board except for May's, which are not here yet. In March, Pearland's circulation surpassed that of Lake Jackson. The Assistant Director of the County, Bill Hord, has resigned, and a page,Minh Doan, who was Pearland's class valedictorian, is leaving for West Point. The library budget as submitted to the city was passed out. It differs from last year's in that carpet and exterminator costs were put into a different fund this year. Also, under the McNaughton plan, money has been requested for 60 books per month instead of the present 55 per month.. A different amount for phone expenditures has been requested because of a different phone arrangement at the reference desk. Capital outlay has also been requested for computer catalogs. Dede will be on vacation during the informal budget workshop meeting, and she will ask someone from the board to attend in her absence. Pearland and Lake Jackson have been designated "regional libraries" and will be able to have more reference materials, etc. Bettye pointed out that our library workers have spent much work on interlibrary loans and this effort has enabled them to offer more assistance. Bettye did attend workshops for BCLS today. $82,000.00 in additional funds has been requested for workers, books, and periodicals. Bettye said she felt the commissioners were receptive to the library's needs, and Pearland should get a clerk this year. The Mayor asked if General Homes had been contacted, since they are interested in amenities to attract homebuyers, and Bettye reported they have been approached and probably would donate the land. There was no county library report due to Steve's absence. Richard Tetens and the Mayor made some comments about the city budget and Dede inquired about the status of the city manager. Richard said applications have been received and will be considered as well as the acting city manager. The Mayor said it would benefit the library if board members would continue to attend council and make library needs and activities known. He urged us to have a five- year plan and include future needs. Dede said the capacity for our library is 50,000 volumes and we now have 35,000. When the meeting adjourned Dede showed the group the new computer hardware bought with recent donations. One computer uses discs to search for topics in periodical literature and an updated disc is received every two months. The other computers are for the card catalog. Respectfully submitted, dy De ecs, Secretary Rosalie Olah, Chairman
