1991-03-19 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD r.LAUTES
March 19, 1991 7:30 P.M.
In attendance for the March meeting were Steve Brown, Ed Fondren, Richard Tetens,
Dede Williams, Nancy Sallee, Judy Demecs, and Chairman Rosalie Olah. Minutes were
read and approved as read.
Nancy gave the treasurer's report as follows:
$ 392.73 Previous balance
38.00 TLA dues paid for Dede for year
$ 354.73
In Dede's report the statistical report showed growth for February. Rosalie, Bettye,
and Ed have been reappointed to the board. One clerk has resigned and another hired.
Dede described spring adult programs and reported that one concerning landscaping
with native plants was filled. She had a sheet describing programs for April:
"Literary East Texas," author Bill Crider, and author and humorist Jim Everhart..
A brochure described the twenty-five Texas writers and their photographs which will
be on display. The display case currently houses a display by Brazoria County Kennel
Club, which also donated a book about the club.
The Rotary Club will donate $500.00 for audiotapes. Dede further said the card
catalog will close May 3rd and no more cards will be received. In regard to future
expansion architect Bill Miller came and estimated construction costs. To add 8,442
square feet the cost will be between $475,000 and $575,000, excluding furnishings.
This would double the public area of the library.
Steve explained the collection is expected to grow to 50,000 volumes by 1995, with
two factors affecting this figure: more will be budgeted for books for Pearland
Library beginning this year, and additional weeding must be done because of added
wear on books. Steve showed Pearland Library collection growth and circulation growth
projections, which demonstrated that it is time to begin planning for added space.
RiChard_T.. encouraged board members to begin lobbying city council for future library
expansion so that projected spending budgets can be allocated in our direction. He
suggests making a presentation to council of increased growth and recommends asking
candidates for council their views on library support. Steve will compile a presen-
tation suitable for council to show user growth.
A central group is developing a recognition event about June 18th to celebrate the
50th anniversary of the Brazoria County Library System, but it will be up to local
libraries to plan their individual events. A press packet will be developed for use
by individual libraries in the county. Steve will keep our library informed of plans.
Steve said county library members had had a luncheon meeting with commissioners
court members recently and discussed future development plans needed. Approximately
a two -acre tract would be needed for a branch library. Steve reported the Lake Jackson
expansion has been completed and the building is attractive.
