Pearland Library Board Minutes
January 21, 1992 T:30 P.M.
When Chairman Rosalie Olah called the meeting to .order the following were present:
Steve Brown, Bettye Alexander, Dave Beckman, Nancy Sallee, Dede Williams, Joy Colson,
Vicki Prebilsky, and Judy Demecs.
Treasurer Nancy Sallee reported that the balance remained the same, $354.73. She
made a motion that the board pay Dede's annual T.L.A. dues as in the past; motion
carried. Dede welcomed Vicki Prebilsky as a new board member. When she circulated
the monthly statistics, she noted that Pearland circulated more than Lake Jackson in
the months of November and December. Dede plans to speak to Wal-Mart and K -Mart about
possible computer donations and asked if the board could suggest other companies that
might be interested. Pauluhn and Koza's were named as possibilities, as well as Occi-
dental Chemical and the Pearland banks. Dede announced that another AARP tax program
will be offered in the library beginning February 4th. She inquired whether anyone
knows of a person that could be hired under the government -funded senior citizens'
program, as there is an opening for a 20 -hour. -per -week position.
In regard to library expansion, Dede asked Joy what should be our next step. Joy had
been asked by city council to inquire whether one-half of the third floor of the City
Hall building could be used by the library in any manner. Dede and Steve said it could
-not at this time. Steve said he thought Mr. Miller, the architect, would come for an
initial discussion with no fee. It was decided that Mr. Miller should be invited to
the next library board meeting which will be held on March 24th. Bettye will contact
him. Dede will be attending ALA meeting in San Antonio this month.
Steve reported that bookmobile service has stopped at Corrigan North and South and
that stops have been added in Southwyck and Southdown. County Commissioner Jim Clawson
has been working on acquiring a library site donation in the vicinity of Co. Rd. 94
at Co. Rd. 403. Steve commented that Pearland's increase in library circulation is
outstanding and commendable, and that the problem comes in how increased library ser-
vices will be funded. Billy Joe Plaster wants library representative to be forthright
in explaining budgetary needs to him and other commissioners. Steve said he may request
our help in expressing needs to commissioners. For the benefit of new members, Steve
explained briefly how automation for the library would cut the clerical time requirements
for all county library chores. In the near future, it is estimated that the library will
circulate from 1.4 million to 1.9 million items per year; automation would allow a saving
in the number of employees required for clerical duties. Steve related that they have
visited several library systems to see their automation. He discussed briefly the types
of automation now available and said the committee will be studying six or seven systems
in great detail.
Dave said the new Texas Highways features an article on libraries and shows some
that have been housed in various buildings such as a bank. Joy said that reappointment
of Nancy and Dave is coming up, and asked whether they would continue to serve; both
agreed.
Steve said that Harris County is working on a new library branch in the Beamer/Scarsdale
area and suggested that future consideration be given to an alliance between Friendswood,
Harris County and Pearland, which could prove beneficial to all.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
