1992-03-24 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTESPearland Library Board Minutes
March 24, 1992 6:30 P.M.
The meeting was called to order early so that the architect Mr.
Miller could be present. Those in attendance were Steve Brown,
Joy Colson, Dave Beckman, Ed Fonden, Bettye Alexander, Nancy
Sallee, Dede Williams, and Judy Demecs.
Mr. Miller presented his recommendations for future library
expansion. He suggested asking for a variance from the city
planning and zoning committee so that the outer wall could be
extended an additional ten feet toward Liberty Drive. Following
this, the property line should be surveyed, he said. If the
variance is granted, Mr. Miller would change the present plan
accordingly and would have a figure on which to base plans. An
addition of approximately 5,762 feet would double the public area
of the library. Columns to aid in expansion have been built into
the library walls.
Funding has been requested for 1994-1995. Mr. Miller suggested
that in the interim Dede work on furniture layout. Dave inquired
about air conditioning and Mr. Miller said something would have to
be added for the new area. He said to allow for $15/square yard
installed for carpeting of the quality of the present carpet. He
recommended allowing six months for the architectural plans before
funding becomes available. He said price rise is figured at 5% a
year.
It was suggested that the consultant for Houston Public Libraries
might be helpful.
The regular portion of the meeting began with Nancy's treasurer's
report showing an expenditure of $38.00 for TLA's annual dues for
Dede. This left a balance of $316.73.
Statistics bore out Dede's statement that the library has been
very busy lately, showing that Pearland circulateSmore than the
other county libraries. A recent well-received adult program was
on day lilies. AARP volunteers have been offering help with taxes
on Tuesdays.
Dave told Dede his son will donate a 286 computer to the library.
Steve said the staff increase has been requested for next year's
budget, with the secondary request being for books. He has been
looking into automation systems at ALA and will see more at TLA
meeting in Houston in April. Steve said reports show that
Pearland has been the busiest library in the county for the last
four months. It will be a tough year for funding requests and
there are many needs.
Steve reported on the possibility of a future branch site west of
Pearland. He talked to Commissioner Clawson and has seen the site
U. S. Homes has offered near Country Place, on Co. Rd. 94 north of
Co. Rd. 403, about a three -acre site. Steve discussed the
ramifications of accepting a piece of property and the need to get
a representative of the county and the city to discuss and
establish a schedule for progressing. Drainage and access to the
property look good. The area now has 5,000 people more than in
1980. The site is about nine miles from here and it is unlikely
that residents would drive to the present facility often.
Nancy asked Dede whether she would like for us to help enlist
volunteers for routine library chores, and Dede said this would be
appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,
