1992-05-19 PEARLAND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES,o
Pearland Library Board Minutes ,-
May 19, 1992 7;30 P.M.
Present at the meeting were chairman Rosalie Olah, Dede Williams,
Steve Brown, Dave Beckman, Nancy Sallee, Vicki Prebilsky, and Judy
Demecs. Treasurer Nancy reported that the balance remains $316.73.
Dede reported that library personnel are busy planning the summer
reading programs. Billie has set up many special programs in
addition to the regular ones. Dede thanked Dave's son, Steve, for
his donation of a computer to the library, and commented that Nancy
has been regularly volunteering. Dede reported that job training
teenagers will get to work only about six weeks this summer, whereas
previously they have been able to work longer. Dede reported good
help from the program. Circulation has made Pearland second in the
county this month.
Work on the city budget has begun but Dede said the library's
requests will be much the same as last year. Among other items
requested is a computer work station that is wheelchair accessible,
and the McNaughton Plan is requested again.
Steve commented on the statistical reports and said his budget has
been submitted recently. He asked for a full-time clerk for Pearland
and requested a reference librarian, for the sevemth year Steve
requested $300,000 in this year's budget for automation.
On the future west Pearland library site, Steve has talked with
Commissioner Clawson. Steve said other commissioners may not commit
so that property owners will donate at this time. The situation of
having an area of large population but not being incorporated creates
a problem; there is a different situation from one in which the city
furnished the building and the county furnishes the books. It may be
wise to approach the new city manager about speaking with property
owners about donation of property. Bettye suggested that perhaps
Commissioner Clawson could make an arrangement for land with
stipulations that, for example, the land be returned in ten years if
not used for the library. A planned location could give leverage.
Dede said a push for volunteers is planned for fall; Steve asked if
an ad in the local papers might help. Nancy suggested a volunteer
button would be helpful.
Bettye spoke about the variance needed from the planning and zoning
committee so that the outer wall could be extended an additional ten
feet toward Liberty Drive in the extension of the present library. A
survey will be needed. The $100 fee for a variance has been waived,
and the variance request may possibly be heard next week. Bettye
said it would be good if several could be present for the hearing.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy emecs, Secretary
