1961-08-03 CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING MINUTESUS MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE PEARLAND CITY COUNCIL HELD AUGUST 3, 1961, IN THE CITY HALL The regular meeting of the Pearland City Council was called to order at 7:30 P.M. in the City Hall by Mayor Gibbons with the following City officials and guests in attendance: Victor A. Shannon The minutes of July 20, 1961 were read and discussed and will be submitted in typed form for approval at the next meeting. The secretary was instructed to prepare a letter to Regency Park regarding date of service on two lights for Regency Park Sub -Division. A motion was made by Nolen and seconded by Hawkins that Marvin Ellis be paid $90.00 for expenses to attend fire- man's training school. All aldermen voted "Aye" with no "Noes" Hawkins next discussed the phone situation and sug- gested that there was a good possibility that Pearland could lose the gross receipts taxes prior to ordinance passage. Mayor Gibbons discussed recent talks with Mr. Singletary on this same subject and suggested that we should grant a fran- chise to the phone company. After a lengthy discussion it was agreed that Mr. Lipic with Regency Park should be advised of Pearland thoughts and position on the phone company ordinance and request that he feel out the phone company regarding our granting a franchise and the effect on our getting Houston phone service. Mr. Shannon discussed drainage district problems and suggested that the City prepare a letter requesting storm sewers be installed along Highway 518 and Highway 35. Mayor Gibbons requested the secretary prepare the letter requested by Mr. Shannon. Mayor Gibbons also requested that the secretary prepare a letter to the Commissioners Court setting out the effectiveness of the Pearland Drainage Commissioners and ex- pressing satisfaction with the way our tax drainage dollars are being spent. Marvin Ellis discussed the coming bond election to buy County Fire equipment on August 19,1961. Mayor Gibbons instructed the secretary to advise the water district that the City expects all streets crossed by water or sewerage lines be bored or ditches filled with stabilized shell and covered with a minimum of 2" of black top. Mayor Gibbons next discussed the streetsign survey and the needed signs. The street and bridge committee was in- structed in conjunction with the Chief of Police to review the sign survey and decide which signs should be installed first. They were instructed to report back within two weeks. With no further business to attend the meeting ad- joiirned at 10:40 P.M. (CORP.
