1960-08-18 CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING MINUTESi MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY,_OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, HELD AUGUST 18, 1960 ------------------------------------------------- The meeting of the City Council of the City of Pearland, Texas,_ was called to order by Mayor Gibbons on August 18, 1960, in the Pearland Junior high School Board Room, with the following City Officials present: Mayor Aldermen W. E. Parker, Tom Alexander Nolen. E. T. Gibbons L. C. Hawkins, David Smith, Jr., and Victor A. Guests present at the meeting were.Mr. O. O. Terrell and Mr. Jack Pearson. The minutes of the previous -meeting of August 4, 1960, were read and approved as read. - Mr. 0. O. Terrell first appeared before the Council and introduced his Vice -President, Mr. Jack Pearson. He dis- cussed.possible sale of gas to the City of Pearland shopld the City decide tb-:install a municipal system. Mr. Terrell indicated hq!,.Would install a system for the City and sell gas for $0.30/Mcf providing he was allowed to operate the system. Mr. Terrell also recommended to the Council that,his Company and the Houston Natural Gas Company be allowed to compete in preference to Municipal Ownership. He was requested to prepare an estimate for piping the City of Pearland with a municipal gas system and -present to the Council. The next matter to come before the Council was that of a motion by Alderman.Smith that a contract be signed by the City of Pearland with Mr. M. S. Drake, leasing the North Apex of Texas Avenue, described as follows: Extending South 175 feet from the Southeast corner of Lot 39, Block 2, Pearland Townsite, along --the East line of Block 2 to a point for corner, the same being the Southeast corner of Lot 32, Block 2; Thence East along a line parallel with the:South boundary line of Lot 32, Block 2, approximately 37 feet to a point for corner on the West boundary line of a 50 foot strip of land adjacent to G.C.&S.F. Railroad; Thence in a North Northwesterly direction along the West boundary line of a 50 foot strip and the East right of way line of Texas Avenue to the place of origin at apex of triangle, said area being approximately 3,237 square feet, more or less. Such tract to be leased for a term of fifty (50) years from September 1, 1960, terminating September 1, 2010, for the following consideration, termed rental: The sum of Five 62 Hundred ($500.00) Dollars is hereby --acknowledged by cover a period of first 25 and beginning on and with of $48.55 per year payable ensuing term of the lease, cash in hand paid, receipt of which the City Secretary, which shall years' lease to September 1, 1985, the 26th year, an annual rental annually in advance for•the or the remaining 25 years. After a lengthy discussion of the matter, the motion was duly seconded by Alderman Parker, WHEREUPON, the question was asked and the motion carried, all present voting "AYE", with no "NOES". Mayor Gibbons next appointed a committee, consisting of Aldermen Hawkins, Parker and Nolen, to investigate purchase of furniture for the City Office and Jail. City Police Chief Johnson next appeared before the Council and indicated a need to fix permanent speeds within the City of Pearland. He also indicated he would like to work full time for the City. Alderman Smith next made a motion, which was duly seconded by Alderman Alexander, that Police Chief Johnson be retained as Chief of Police on a full time basis for a monthly salary of $375.00 Dollars per month for his 'car, other necessary equipment and himself, with expenses to be paid at the rate of $3.00 per charge per arrest. WHEREUPON the question was asked and the motion carried, all present voting "AYE", with no "NOES". There being no further business to come before the meeting the same was adjourned at 12:00 P.
