1960-07-21 CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING MINUTESMW MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND HELD JULY 21st, 1960 The meeting of the City.Council_of_the City of Pearland, Texas, was called to order by Mayor Gibbons on --July 21, 1960, at 8:00 P. M. in the Pearland Junior High School-.__ Board Room, with the following City Officials present: Mayor Alderman Alderman Alderman Alderman Alderman City Attorney E. T. Gibbons W. E. Parker V. A. Nolen Tom Alexander L. C. Hawkins D. L. Smith, Jr. Jack Harrison Guests in attendance were: Mr. J. M. Young, and Mr. Clifford A. Brandt, with the Houston Natural Gas Company, Mr. S. P. O'Farrell, Mr. Pete Workman, Ms. Linn C. Eignus, Mr. Harold E. Smith and Mr. Rex Clawson. Also in attendance was Mr. M. S. Drake. The Minutes of the previous meeting of July 7, 1960, were read and approved as read. Mr. M. S. Drake presented plans for expanding the brass and aluminum foundary which will. involve closing part of Texas Avenue where it intersects the railroad right-of-way. Mr. Harrison was instructed to investigate the legal aspects of releasing this City land to private enterprise. Mr. Drake was informed that the City would advise him as to a decision on the matter after the next meeting date of the Council on August 4, 1960. Mr. S. P. O'Farrell and other Friendswood representatives appeared before the Council and restated their desire for Pearland to de -annex part of the territory on the East edge of Brazoria County so that Friendswood might annex the area as part of their boundaries. Mr. Rex Clawson stated that he would check all of the legal angles regarding Texas City's claim on Galveston County territory and meet with Pearland at a future date to discuss the matter further. Mr. Marvin Young, with Houston Natural Gas Company, discussed his company's plans regarding the warehousing site west of the City of Pearland and expressed an urgent need for a letter stating the City's position regarding granting of a franchise to the Houston Natural Gas Company. After a lengthy discussion of the matter, a motion was made by Alderman Hawkins and seconded by Alderman Smith that a letter be furnished by Mayor Gibbons to Houston Natural Gas Company stating that the City of Pearland will, after determination of the feasibility of a municipally owned gas system and within eight months, give serious and sincere consideration to the granting of a long term franchise to Houston Natural Gas Company as prescribed by letter. WHEREUPON, the question was asked and the motion carried, all present voting "AYE", with no "NOES". There being no further business to come before the Meeting, the same was adjourned at 11:00 P.
