MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF
PEARLAND HELD JANUARY 14th, 1960

The regular meeting of the City Council of the City
of Pearland, Texas, was.called to order by Mayor Gibbons at
7:30 O'clock P. M. on January 14, 1960, in the Pearland
Junior High school Board Room, with the following City

The Minutes of the January 7th, 1960 meeting were
read, corrected and approved.
The first matter to come before the meeting was that:
of discussing State Highway Department Operation within
incorporated cities. Mr. Dale D. Marvel with the Texas State
Highway Department was introduced to the City Officials and
he read and discussed the Highway Department contract offered
to cities to enable the state to operate in corporate
boundaries on state highways. After a general discussion
it was agreed that a population figure of 1750 would be
posted on city limit signs by the State until such time as
the 1960 official census count is available. A motion was
made by Alderman Hawkins that an ordinance be passed adopting
the contract offered by the State which would enable them to
operate within the City of Pearland. The motion was seconded
by Alderman Smith, WHEREUPON the question was asked and the
motion was carried, all present voting "AYE", with no "NOES".
The next matter to come before the meeting was that
of furnishing the City of Pearland with gas facilities. Mr.
O. O. Terrell was introduced to the Council and he discussed
his proposal concerning furnishing the City with gas facilities.
Mr. Terrell stressed installation of modern safety equipment,
discounted monthly bills and longer tap lines per house as
the advantages his company was offering as compared with
competitive gas utility companies. A motion was made by
Alderman Parker and seconded by Alderman Hawkins that Mr.
Terrell's proposal be taken under consideration. WHEREUPON,
the question was asked and the motion was carried, all present
voting "AYE", with no "NOES".
Alderman Alexander next made a motion that the
L. U. L. A. C.'s be granted City approval to obtain a beer
license. The motion was seconded by Alderman Hawkins, WHEREUPON
the question was asked and the motion was carried, all present
voting "AYE", with no "NOES".
The next matter to come before the meeting was that
of appointing a Street & Bridge Committee for the City of
Pearland. After a general discussion, a motion was made by

members of the Street & Bridge Committee. WHEREUPON, the
question was asked and the motion was carried, all present
voting "AYE", with no "NOES". Mayor Gibbons instructed
the Street & Bridge Committee to investigate County road
requirements, and to develop a recommendation as to how the
City should maintain their streets and bridges..
