1959-12-17 CITY COUNCIL REGULAR MEETING MINUTESMINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND HELD DECEMBER'17th, 1959 The first meeting of the newly elected City Officials of the City of Pearland, Texas, was called to order at 7:45 o'clock P. M., on December 17th, 1959, by Mayor E. T. -Mbons, with -the following Aldermen and guests present: E. T. Gibbons Tom Alexander L. C. Hawkins W. E. Parker Davis L. Smith Victor A. Nolen Jack Miller Jake B. Clegg, Jr. R. E. Segelquist Mayor Alderman Alderman Alderman Alderman Alderman Marshall Lawyer Justiceofthe The first matter to come before the meeting was a� brief discussion by Mr. Jake B. Clegg, Jr. of the legal activity which had been involved in incorporation of the City of Pearland up to the current date. Mr. Clegg requested that a check be made with the Commissioners Court Record ,that the Order of Election for Incorporation and.the Order of Election.of.City Officials had been recorded in said Court record. He presented correspondence from the Houston Lighting and Power Company regarding a contract to serve the City of Pearland. Mr. Clegg indicated that this fulfilled his duties to the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club regarding incorporation. He suggested that the first order of business .of the Council should be the adoption of the laws of the State of Texas pertaining to General Law Towns & Villages. Alder- man Nolen, acting on behalf of the Lions Club, reported that Mr. Clegg's services with regard to incorporation of the City, had been satisfactory and in fulfillment of contract pro- visions with Mr. Clegg. Mr. Clegg was recommended to the City as a candidate for City Attorney. Alderman Tom Alexander expressed the same satisfaction for work performed by Mr. Clegg and recommended him on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. The next matter to come before the meeting was that of establishing a regular meeting night of the City Officials. A motion was made by Alderman W. E. Parker that the first Thursday of each month be established as the regular meeting night of the City Officials, said regular meetings to be held at 7:30 o'clock P. M. on such dates, with the meeting place to be announced later. A general discussion was had.on the motion, and the same was seconded by Alderman Tom Alexander, WHEREUPON the question was asked and the motion was carried, all present voting "AYE", with no "NOES". The next matter to come before the meeting was that of officially swearing in .the newly elected City Officials of the City of Pearland. Judge R. E. Segelquist, Justice of the Peace, took charge, of the ceremonies and officially swore in the newly elected Mayor, Alderman and Marshall. Mayor E. T. Gibbons next called for special meeting of the City Officials to be held Monday, December 21st, 1959. 2 There being no further business to come before the meeting, the same was adjourned at 8:40 o'clock P.
