A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT AN
APPLICATION TO THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
UNDER THE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM OF THE INTERMODAL SURFACE
TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCY ACT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF
ONE-WAY BICYCLE LANES AND SIDEWALKS ON EACH SIDE OF F.M.
518, FROM LIBERTY DRIVE TO WOODCREEK DRIVE, AND
ALLOCATING MATCHING FUNDS FROM THE CITY OF PEARLAND.
WHEREAS, F.M. 518 serves not only Pearland but also northern
Brazoria County; and,
WHEREAS, The construction of bicycle lanes and sidewalks will
enhance F.M. 518 by providing additional modes of transportation;
and,
WI4EREAS, Bicycles and sidewalks can serve as an all-around
short distance transportation alternative to vehicle trips to local
schools, shopping, recreational facilities, and neighborhood
destinations; and,
WHEREAS, Bicycle lanes and sidewalks will promote local
economic growth by making the local businesses more accessible to
everyone in the community; and,
WHEREAS, Walking and bicycling as alternative modes of
transportation will help reduce vehicular emissions, thereby
improving air quality; and,
WHEREAS, Bicycle lanes and sidewalks will enhance public
safety by separating vehicular traffic from pedestrian traffic.
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PEARLAND, TEXAS:
Section 1. That the City Manager is authorized to submit
an application to the Texas Department of Transportation under the
Enhancement Program of the Intermodal Surface Transportation
Efficiency Act for the construction of sidewalks and one-way
bicycle lanes on each side of F.M. 518, from Liberty Drive to
Woodcreek Drive.
Section 2. That matching funds equal to twenty percent
(20%) of the total project cost, not to exceed $42,984, are hereby
allocated from the Road and Bridge Capital Fund.
