R83-16 07-11-83 RESOLUTION NO. R83-16 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, REQUESTING THE COMMISSIONER'S COURT OF BRAZORIA COUNTY TO SET UP AN ABSENTEE VOTING FACILITY IN SUB-TAX OFFICE IN NORTHERN BRAZORIA COUNTY. WHEREAS, voting is one of our ~umerican rights and privileges and helps to keep this Country free; and WHEREAS, there are many people in this area who find it im- possible to be available on the dates set for Federal, State and County General Elections and wish to cast their ballot under the absentee voting privilege; and WHEREAS, at the present, the only place to cast an absentee ballot is at the County Courthouse, Angleton, Texas, and this re- quires a great deal of time and expense to make the trip; and WHEREAS, in past General Elections, only four percent (4%) of the registered voters have cast absentee ballots in Angleton; and WHEREAS, if the'polls were more locally situated during the period of absentee voting, more people could cast their ballots; and WHEREAS, a building i$ presently available for such location of an absentee voting place, namely, the sub-tax office located on Highway 35 South of Pearland, and approximately half-way between Pearland and Alvin; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS: THAT the City Council of the City of Pearland, hereby re- spectfully requests that the Brazoria County Commissioners Court consider an allocation in their 1984 Budget, and in subsequent years, for funds to cover an absentee voting location in the Pear- land, Brookside, Manvel and Alvin area for General Elections held by the County.
