R2011-016 - 2011-01-24RESOLUTION NO. R2011 -16 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, OPPOSING THE PROPOSAL OF THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO ELIMINATE STATE FUNDING FOR BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE. WHEREAS, since 1968 Brazosport College has served as an open door, equal access higher education institution committed to providing the best courses, programs, and activities that can be organized and presented to meet the identified needs of adult learners from varied backgrounds; and WHEREAS, Since its establishment in 1968, Brazosport College has played an important role in the personal successes of more than 125,000 students and has become the key provider of a highly trained work force for local industry employers in Brazoria County, offering a broad range of courses and classes to address diverse educational goals, and WHEREAS, the current enrollment of Brazosport College is over 4,100 students, including students from Pearland and other cities throughout Brazoria County and the region, and WHEREAS, whereas Brazosport College employs over 400 people, including residents of Pearland and other cities throughout Brazoria County and the region, and WHEREAS, Brazosport College is experiencing double digit growth, and the State of Texas has historically based appropriations to community colleges on growth from one legislative session to the next, and WHEREAS, the Texas Legislature has proposed the elimination of state funding for Brazosport College, which could essentially cause Brazosport College to close and the closure of Brazosport College would prevent thousands of students from obtaining RESOLUTION NO. R2011 -16 an education, lead to the loss hundreds of jobs and negatively affect Brazoria County and the region; and, nowtherefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS: Section 1 That the City opposes the proposal of the Texas Legislature to eliminate state funding for Brazosport College.
