R99-016 03-08-99 RESOLUTION NO. R99-16 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS, ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE BRAZOSPORT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, THE BRAZORIA COUNTY PARTNERSHIP, AND ITS VOLUNTEERS, WHO ARE WORKING TO BRING THE SPACEPORT TO BRAZORIA COUNTY. WHEREAS, the State of Texas has committed its good faith, resources, and efforts to attract commercial space transportation to the State of Texas, an industry that is projected to reach $144 billion annually in the year 2000; and WHEREAS, Brazoria County, Texas, has been determined to be a strong contender as a location for a commercial Space Launch Facility ("Spaceport") capable of launching a new generation of space vehicles carrying commercial satellites and other essential cargo into space; and WHEREAS, construction of such a facility in Brazoria County would create an estimated 3,000 direct jobs in Brazoria County and cause a capital investment of several hundred million dollars, thus impacting the economy throughout the Gulf Coast Region and across Texas; and WHEREAS, the creation of a Spaceport in Brazoria County, Texas, would also enhance the existing aerospace capabilities already Galveston, Harris, and Fort Bend Counties; and WHEREAS, such a project would serve as a in Texas and in neighboring catalyst for future education, technical innovation, research, and development, and therefore bring Brazoria County and the State of Texas to the forefront as a leader in science and technology; now, therefore, RESOLUTION NO. R99-16 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS: Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Pearland, Texas, hereby endorses and supports the efforts of the Brazosport Chamber of Commerce, the Brazoria County Partnershipi and its volunteers (community and industry leaders), who are working to bring the Spaceport to Brazoria County. The City of Pearland, by Resolution and affirmation, pledges to lend its full support to the Brazoria County Spaceport Project, a public/private facility that will create thousands of new jobs in Brazoria County and spur an economic boom in our area. This is a project that will impact the entire county with over 3,000 direct jobs and a capital investment now estimated at nearly $350 million dollars. The Spaceport can add diversity to our labor force that is badly needed. It will serve as a catalyst for future Research and Development projects and the creation of hundreds of new high paying, high technology jobs for our area. We are asking you to endorse a resolution in support of the Spaceport. A sample resolution is enclosed for your use. We need to show Lockheed Martin and elected. officials at the state and federal level that Brazoria County is serious about aerospace. These resolutions will become a part of the final packet that will go forward to Lockheed Martin later this spring.
