We ordered pizza for the staff on Wednesday with the Friends card, which the staff appreciated. BUILDING The building did not sustain any damage. We had a leak in the usual area by the conference room. The elevators were on fire department mode (through Saturday) so we rigged a pulley system for getting books up and down the stairs. In addition, the air conditioning did not work in the patron gallery/meeting rooms until Monday. We notified bookings so they could determine if they still wanted to meet. We also have trees down in the back as well as in the parking area. The City has been working on the trees this week. We turned the meeting rooms into charging areas/place to eat meals. Even without the AC we saw alot of use. We also showed movies in the Storytime room as an additional option for families. We had our regular preschool storytime on Wednesday with many new faces; we also had our Slime Time programWednesday afternoon. As of Monday evening, everyone had power restored, but many were glad to come in Wednesday and Thursday to enjoy the AC at the branch. BUILDING The two spots that have been leaking, leaked more during the storm. The wind also was blowing the direction needed to blow rain into the book drop and we had a large pile of books in a puddle of water on Monday afternoon. The power was on when I came to check the building on Monday afternoon but the AC was not running. Thankfully the City was on call and got someone over quickly to get it running again. There were a number of branches throughout the lawn and parking lot but all was cleaned up quickly. We had a lot of people show up and stay the majority of the day. We opened the meeting and conference room as extra seating and charging areas. Our Henna Art program had to be canceled because the performer was unable to make it out, hopefully we will be able to reschedule it for some time in August. Thursday saw things calm down some and we were back to about normal by Friday. We did Preschool Storytime on Thursday but it was smaller than normal. On Tuesday, July 18, David Melgoza from the City reached out and on Wednesday we discussed FEMA using the library as a Disaster Recovery Center in the coming weeks. We are still waiting to hear more from him and FEMA about if our location will work. Page 5 of 8 PEARLAND (TOM REID) LIBRARY BRANCH LIBRARIAN’S REPORT APRIL TO JUNE 2024 BUILDING CHANGES The AC unit continues to struggle to keep up in May. One of the pumps has gone out and we are still waiting on a quote to see about getting it replaced. We also had a small ceiling leak during one of the intense rainstorms in May, thankfully not over any of the bookshelves. The AC pump was worked on June 22 and we closed the building for the day since the AC was offline for 7 hours while we would be open. More repairs will be coming in July. STAFF C HANGES Heather Ware, one of our shelvers, had her last day during the end of June as she moves on to other endeavors. We wish her well and have already conducted interviews to fill that position. Their grand total for eFiles was over 500 for the season this year. We are so glad we are able to provide AARP with the space to allow this service to happen. Family Fun Night had a good time playing games this month. Writer’s Group continues to see new and old faces attend. One of our published authors read new chapters this month too! No teens came out for friendship bracelets but we’re hopeful they will be back in May. A patron brought by some expired seeds from her job that could no longer be sold. We planted some in a hydroponic garden behind the circulation desk and some outside in one of the flower beds where the ground cover has disappeared. We have a bunch of things that sprouted and we can’t wait to see what grows. Edu-Katie talked about watershed’s this month to wrap things up for April. Page 6 of 8 MAY May was a busy month as we ramped up to summer. Both book clubs continue to see a great turn out with in -depth discussions. Writer’s Group is starting to have so many attendees with writing to share that it is going longer each month. Two teens came out for a learn to draw class with clerk Farren and had a fun time drawing Sonic the Hedgehog characters. We had two ladies come in to work on learning to use the Cutie Quilting Frame in the Maker Space this month! They used the space twice and will hopefully be back in June. The run-off election between Jeff Barry and Alex Kamkar brought in more people once again for early voting, as well as some news crews due to suspected bees. We hope for less drama for the general election in November. JUNE Summer has been busy and fun so far. We have had great attendance for every program and most of the children’s programs we have unfortunately had to turn people away due to the fire code capacity. We started the summer off with a kick off party and had over 200 people come through the afternoon. It was a great way to get things going. Our Art Camp, sponsored by TDECU went great with a full house of little artists. We did 2 shows with the AgriLife Extension Office for the Chicks to Children program and everyone, including staff enjoyed all the chicks that hatched! Teens had a great time making Sharpie Tie-Dyed tote bags. The month wrapped up with a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo thanks to Alvin Community College and Edu-Katie brought snakes for Wild Hour Wednesday. Staff has also been enjoying the adventure theme with weekly dress-up days to go on a different adventure. Photos are from Art Camp, Chicks to Children, Musical Instruments and some of the staff on Super Hero Day.
