LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
July 20, 2023
The Library Board of the City Council of Pearland, Texas, convened in a meeting on July
20, 2023, at the West Pearland Library, 11801 Shadow Creek Pkwy, Pearland, Texas. The
following represents the actions taken in the order they occurred during the meeting.
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairman McLain called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.
II. ROLL CALL AND CERTIFICATION OF QUORUM
Members present were Chairman McLain, Member Grimmett, Member Joshi, Member
Reynolds
Member absent is Member Sullivan, Member Nair, Member Dunn
Others present were Kevin Carter, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, and Amy
Coykendall, Executive Assistant, Jennifer Trusty, Librarian, Jessica Williams, Librarian,
Lisa Lorac, Brazoria County Library Systems Director
Citizen(s) present- None present
III. CITIZEN COMMENTS
No Citizens attended.
IV. REGULAR AGENDA
1. Consideration and Possible Action- Certification and Approval of Minutes
from April 20, 2023-
Correct members absent- Member Joshi, Member Nair
Motion to approve with corrections by Member Grimmett. Member Joshi
seconded.
Motion Passed.
2. Discussion- FY23 Q3 and Year to Date Budget
Asst. Director Carter covered the Library’s budget from Q3 and Year to Date.
• Sound tiles for Tom Reid budgeted for $14k, but quote ended being $20k-
$21k. Ms. Trusty explained why Tom Reid needed the sound tiles over the
children’s area. Member Joshi offered an idea that may be cheaper- using
a sound system to play white noise.
3. Discussion- Strategic Planning
Ms. Lorac provided a copy of the Brazoria County Strategic planning report.
Chair McLain put forth the question if there were any other ideas from the last
meeting:
• Member Grimmett- Saw yard signs saying “I love my Library” while
travelling. Brought forth the ideas of giving them away, selling them, etc. to
increase visibility of the libraries. Possible sponsorships to pay for the
signs, and with the Friends of the Library. Carter to check on ordinances.
• Chair McLain asked Ms. Krenzke if there is an informal or formal reception
with the sponsorships and have them invite to their friends to the reception.
Ms. Krenzke said that they have one but they have not requested to invite
friends. It is an idea they have not thought of and will bring up.
• Discussion on Social Media/Marketing presence- Friends of the Library
posts shared on Parks and Recreation Facebook, PLTV: Spotlights on the
Libraries with Communications: facilities, what is available and offered,
broadcasting on Channel 16
• How to get more people interested in being a “Friend of the library” or
become more visible; Friends Group active and attempt to make it easy for
people to find/join; Ms. Loranc informed board that the Libraries are not
being underutilized
4. Report from Friends of the West Pearland Library-
Ms. Krenzke reported on the following:
• Filed with the State Secretary to officially changed name; new logo in
process
• Shared events updates from last quarter and upcoming events
• Memberships: all individual members, no push for corporate memberships
at this time
• Handouts provided
5. Report from Brazoria County Library Director-
Ms. Loranc has provided information on the following:
• Correction on 7,318,969 hours to minutes
• Provided handout with discussion points:
o Materials challenges coming from Pearland community- 18 in 5
months
Board wanted clarification on the challenge process and the
review committee
Discussed the types of books typically challenged- Adult
graphic novels with LGBTQ+ topics, authors of Color, or
Political topics; children’s books: “It’s Perfectly Normal” and
“Rainbow Revolution”.
• Strategic Development Plan for Brazoria County Library System, handout
provided
o Discussed Library needs over the next 20 years charts on page 4:
Light blue current usage, gray capacity/building usage
o Map on page 5: dot is a branch, circle is a 7 mile radius from the
branch; biggest gap is on 288 corridor (Manvel, Iowa Colony,
Rosharon) where the biggest development is happening
o Shifting demographics, population growth
6. Report from Brazoria County Branch Librarians-
Ms. Williams- West Pearland Library-
• Handout provided
• Cooling station for the county
• Summer programs
o Slime time- over 200 children attended
o Paint with Robots
o Miss Ruby next week
• First ever Teen Lock-in
o 6 pm-9 pm
o Asst. Director Carter asked if night hike with August ended in a
nighttime library scavenger hunt
• Staffing changes
• DataVox still having issues
Ms. Trusty- Tom Reid Library
• Handout provided
• Facility issues
o Front door stayed open month of April, fixed in May
o Clogged drain in back maintenance area
• Door count numbers
o Numbers are down since West Pearland opened
• Received Crumbl cookies during National Library Week from a family
• 60 new library cards last 2 days of May
• Miss Ruby Program- almost 300 attendees by end of program
V. ADJOURNMENT
Motion to adjourn by Member Grimmett. Motion seconded by Member Joshi.
