1994-06-20 Parks, Recreation and Beautification Board Minutes Aw June 1994 Minutes MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD, HELD ON MONDAY, JUNE 20, 1994, AT 7:00 P.M. , AT THE PEARLAND CITY HALL, 3519 LIBERTY DRIVE, PEARLAND TEXAS. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. , with the following present: Bill Chase Chairman Bari Scherrer Chairman Pro-tem (entered @ 7: 07) James Skipper Secretary Retta Absher Board Member Nell Fuller Board Member Michelle Lilie Board Member Bob Pond Board Member Gary Walters Board Member D. A. Miller Council Liaison Ed Hersh Parks & Recreation Director Sherry Reed Parks & Recreation Secretary Absent from the meeting was Tootie McComb, Board Member who called in ill . APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Bob Pond made a motion to accept the minutes of the June 20, 1994 Board Meeting as presented. Jim Skipper seconded the motion. Motion passed 8 - 0. STAFF REPORTS: Centennial Park (McLean Park) Project- Ed Hersh reported that staff is still waiting for the Drainage District to begin the excavation of the pond. We expect this to be in mid-July. The benefits of waiting on the Drainage District will help to save money on construction of the park, rather than have a contractor perform this work. -1- Financial Report: The numbers have been very impressive. Activity Report: Summer attendance has been very good. PARK BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT: None. COMMITTEE REPORTS: I . Centennial Parade Update Bari Scherrer reported progress is being made in locating participants for the parade. She also said that we will have a walking entry. Discussion was held on banner designs for the parade which will be held September 24 , 1994 . UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: I . City Entry Sign Project Ed Hersh presented the concept plan for City entrance signs to the Board. This concept plan was the work of Peter Boecher, Vernon Henry & Associates. Discussion was held on the design and location of the signs. Nell Fuller made a motion to recommend the concept plan to City Council for approval . Bob Pond seconded the motion. Motion passed 8 - 0 . COMMUNICATIONS: None. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Sonny Tobias Park - Ed Hersh reported that a new playground unit was installed to replace the older unit at Tobias Park. The new equipment meets safety standards and is an added enhancement to this neighborhood park. July 4th Celebration - Ed Hersh discussed the City's annual July 4th celebration, which will be held at Prensner Stadium, with entertainment provided by the Pearland Community Chorus, led by Danny Davis of First Baptist Church. Fireworks will be the finale of the program. For anyone that might be interested in being a part of the Chorus , they meet on Thursday nights at the Community Center. -2- Alft Recreation Programs - The programs are going very well . This summer we are offering two, 4-week sessions to accommodate summer vacations. Learn-to Swim Program - This program is going well. The classes are being enjoyed by both the students and instructors. i OTHER BUSINESS: Retta Absher had questions regarding Hyde Park and the funds that are being used for the construction of that park. Ed Hersh discussed that part of the funds were being donated by the Banberry Cross Homeowner's Association, and that Council had approved funds in the FY 1993-94 budget to begin this park. Discussion was continued regarding the amount of money that was being spent on this neighborhood park. ADJOURNMENT: Nell Fuller made a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Jim Skipper. Motion approved, 8 - 0. The next meeting is scheduled for the third Monday in July, (7-18-94) . Meeting adjourned at 8:08 P.M.
