A cool word. Four syllables. It rolls off the tongue rather easily… and yet not a word we use every day as it sounds like something one does to a car… or a painting… or an old house or piece of furniture… or maybe a mar-riage… or a friendship… or in the case of the Psalmist here… a life. Yeah, that works. Restoration of a life… and the reason for that kind of restoration is connected to that which was lost… or stolen… or fell through the cracks… from un-intentional neglect… or in another way… one that appears more pos-itive… when given away… as in volunteered… emptied out… and now missed and in need of replen-ishing. Restoration rises to replace that important thing when it shows up gone… and no matter what the circumstance… this is a specialized need.Perhaps in the wake of what is unfolding in the Middle East and what seems to not be going away in Ukraine and the fact that we are still talking about a pandemic and its lin-gering affects… we could use a bit of it… restoration … that is… I know I can… and I know why… and hope-fully you can articulate your need for restoration, too!.Bible scholars and preachers love Psalm 51… as it is about out and out sin… one caught red-handed… con-fronted and judged guilty… yet falls face down to receive God’s mercy… as this passage is connected to a mo-ment in time when King David did a terrible thing by seducing another man’s wife and then had the husband killed… intentionally… by sending him to the front of the front lines in a terrible battle and then when Nathan the priest and prophet called King David out on this… the good king had to face his God… and that’s why this Psalm starts out…“Have mercy on me, O God, ac-cording to your unfailing love; ac-cording to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.” (Psalm 51:1-6)Even the king is not immune from the Law of God… and when some-one like that breaks not one or two but almost all the commandments in one weekend… we can only ask… “what if that was me?” You see… we really can’t embrace anything that sounds like good news without first recognizing there’s been some bad news first! Who’s Nathan the priest and prophet in your life? We all need a pastor. Faith matters… even when and especially if you’re the king!We far too often take advantage of God’s love and mercy. We know how good it is… how faithful God is… when we really need it… yet the trouble is… far too many of us expect love and mercy from God because we think we deserve it… because … you know… “me and God… we got this special thing going…” and King David walks a thin line here when he says… ‘restore to me the JOY of your salvation…” and because he took advantage of his position as king… thinking he was above the law… he was overcome by a lack of favor be-cause of his wretched antics and had a deep need to have his joy restored. So… what’s missing in your life? What’s been lost… or stolen… or has fallen through the cracks? Have you spent so much time giving JOY away… you’ve none left?Leonard Cohen once said, “There’s a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.” because what we lack… our brokenness… our dark-ness… is temporary knowing that JOY comes in the morning… and it lasts… all… day… long…The Rev. Frances Aguilar City Secretary City of Pearland Published November 15 & 22 LEGALS LEGALS Brazoria Master Naturalists learn about redfish By Richard Schaffhausen Shane Bonnot, Advocacy Director CCA Texas, was the featured speaker at the Brazoria chapter of Texas Master Naturalist meeting on November 8 at the AgriLife building in Angleton. Her topic was “Redfish Wars - Past and Present.”Bonnot stated that as far back as 1881, recreational fishermen were concerned about the overharvesting of redfish along our coast. Introducing a monofilament line for commercial nets severely impacted the redfish popula-tion. Nets were cheaper and more ef-fective as they could haul in 6,000 to 8,000 pounds of redfish. Recreational fishermen continued to raise the alarm.Several bills were passed from 1935 on but were ineffective primarily be-cause enforcement was lacking. Final-ly, in 1981, the Texas House of Repre-sentatives passed House Bill 1000 (aka the Redfish Bill), which permanently prohibited the sale of red drums caught in state waters. This measure alone ended the commercial harvest of red drums in Texas. One interesting note: in 1978-1979, over 75 miles of netting was confiscated from the Texas mid-coast bays.In other meeting news, John Boet-tiger, membership chairman, reported that Kim Calhoun and Gina Summers had certified, and Ed Barrios, Kim Calhoun, Jerry Eppner, Carolyn May Monie, and Marlon Nation had recer-tified. Members must have eight hours of advanced training and 40 volunteer hours to recertify. This year to date, members have im-pacted 4,905 adults and 21,789 youth through outreach programs and edu-cational programs such as the “Birds of Prey” programs presented at area schools, Brazoria County Summer Library Programs, and the Discovery Environmental Education Program for area 4th and 7th graders at Brazoria NWR. At the recent Master Naturalist meeting, Kathy Pittman, president, was joined by Juli Martin and Marlon Nation who both recerti- fied, John Boettiger, membership, and Shane Bonnot, the meeting’s featured speaker. The Art of GraciousnessIt seems to me that our society has lost the art of graciousness. There was a time when we had an unwritten law about this — when graciousness was an integral part of our culture.Do you remember the old cartoon, “Chip and Dale”? In almost every episode, the two chipmunks found themselves being chased by a dog. As they neared the entrance of their hole, they would stop briefly and have the same discussion every time about who would enter first: “After you!” “No, I insist, after you!”Back and forth, back and forth, the argument would go. About that time, the dog leaped into the air, ready to pounce on them. Finally, one of the two gracious chipmunks would give in and enter the safety of the home.Very early in my life, my parents taught me to respect and honor elder-ly people or at least anyone over 30. These habits were so ingrained in my life that they became second nature.I remember hearing my mom tell some of her friends, “David has always been loved by our older people in the church because he always is so gra-cious and respectful to them. The just love him to death.”Yes, I am also one of those people who opens doors for ladies and who says, “Yes, sir,” or “No, sir,” without even thinking about it.By the way, my parents had a very practical way of building graciousness into my and my brother’s lives. If we were not gracious or respectful, or if we failed to show good manners, my dad would take us to a “board meet-ing” where he graciously introduced us to the “board of education.” The les-sons of graciousness, like many good lessons, can sometimes be painful. One of God’s qualities is that He is always gracious. He was gracious to Sarah: “Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised” (Gen. 21:1). He was gracious to Israel: “But the LORD was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day He has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from His presence” (2 Kings 13:23).He is gracious to us: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious; slow to anger, abounding in love” (Psalm 103:8).Jesus was also gracious: “All spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His lips. ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son?’ they asked” (Luke 4:22).Yes, teaching your children gra-ciousness is teaching them to be like their heavenly Father. So, of course, it is teaching them to be like Jesus. But there are other reasons you want your children to be gracious.Graciousness enlarges their repu-tations. It works like a magnifying glass to enhance and intensify the good things they do.For example, being known as a dil-igent worker is a good thing. Being known as a gracious and diligent work-er is even better! How do you build this quality into your children’s lives? Begin by mod-eling it in your home and family. Gra-ciousness, like many other character qualities, is more caught than taught. Being gracious with your family mem-bers is one more way of saying, “I love you.”Second, give your children practical skills for living a gracious life. Have your children make follow-up calls or write notes to thank someone for a gift or an opportunity. This will help them begin to learn the language of gra-ciousness.Finally, teach your children - the two cousins of graciousness: respect and manners. Practice these alongside your children and watch them grow.I am very proud to say that my chil-dren are passing this characteristic to their children. All of my grandchil-dren know what to say when they hear, “Now what do you say?”The world we live in is so full of hate that I’m afraid that we are losing the lessons of good manners. May we nev-er lose sight of what it means to be re-spectful and appreciative in all things.Old friend Robert said, “And you know, when you’ve experienced grace and you feel like you’ve been forgiven, you’re a lot more forgiving of other people. You’re a lot more gracious to others.”Email: drdaviddavis@yahoo.comwww.reporternewssports.comTwitter: @drdavis111 Dr. David Davis From the cluttered desk... by Dr David Davis French Astronaut Visits Dawson High School On Tuesday, November 7, French astronaut Jean-Loup Chretien visited Dawson High School to share his experienc- es and inspire future adventurers.
