REPORTER NEWS, July 12, 2023 3SPORTS
Pearland strives to improve for the 2023 football season
The mark of a successful football coach and team is striving to improve in every aspect of the game. That is the de-sire of Pearland head coach B.J. Gotte as he prepares for his second year with the Oilers. Gotte knows what it takes for a foot-ball team to be successful and to be in the upper echelon of competition as he came to Pearland after winning the Class 5A Div. I state title with Katy Paetow. “After going through our first true off-season, it was important for us during spring football to get back to basics fundamentally (blocking and tackling), develop and grow our football under-standing (IQ), while identifying what our strengths and weaknesses are with per-sonnel,” Gotte recently said. “One of the biggest areas of need going into the off-season was to improve our strength, speed, and explosiveness.” There is no question that Pearland will be a stronger team than they were last year after being under the guidance of coach Gotte and his staff. The Oilers finished in third place (5-2) last season in the district while ad-vancing to the post-season for the 23rd consecutive year. They closed out the 2022 season with a 6-5 mark after losing to Dickinson 35-21 in the opening round. “Last year our two district loses were by a combined 11 points, (4 points to Shadow Creek and 7 points to Daw-son) so our goal is to close the gap to our opponents and compete to win a district championship,” Gotte said. “Losing in the first round was a bitter pill to swallow, so we also are working hard to earn the right to win our first-round playoff game and make a run in the playoffs.” Gotte understands the importance of
laying a proper foundation of discipline and hard work -- something the Oilers were lacking over the previous few years before Gotte’s arrival. “After going through our first full off-season, our team averages in every measurable category improved,” Gotte said. “As a team we are stronger, quicker, faster, and more explosive, now the focus is translating that improvement to success on the field.” Pearland is a pre-season pick to fin-ish second in the district behind defend-ing champion Shadow Creek who went 11-1 last year. But Gotte knows that games are won on the field and not in pre-season polls so he is confident that his team will see positive results due their hard work in the off season. In looking forward to the 2023 sea-son, Pearland returns eight offensive and three defensive starters as well as 29 let-termen. “The confidence level in alignment and assignment on both sides of the ball has been encouraging to see this spring,” Gotte pointed out. “We, as a staff, were able to dive more into the details of the fundamentals, scheme and technique this year because of the familiarity of our players had developed from the fall, and we were fully staffed this spring.” Another underlying issue that has drastically been evident is the players are proud to be Oilers again. The sense of pride has re-surfaced that had been lost in recent years. Gotte has also been impressed with some players who have shown vast im-provement since last year. Included on that list is senior QB Cole Morkovsky who has really stepped up to become the field general for the Oil-ers. “Cole is a great leader, super smart, throws the ball well and is a good game
manager,” Gotte said. “I believe he is quite capable to getting the job done which is what we need at this time. He is at a key position in our offense.” Gotte also listed WR Luke Allen and OL Elijah Cavitt as two others who have made an impact and impression on the coaching staff for their effort to improve at their respective positions. Defensively, Gotte listed DL Jaylen Stewart, DB Evan Gracia, and LB Sam Armstrong as key players who have made significant impressions on the coaching staff. Leading the offense this year will be Morkovsky; RB LaDamion McDowell (5-8, 160, 4.5) was named 23-6A Offen-sive Newcomer of the Year. McDowell led the Oilers rushing as he had 151 car-ries for 801 yards and five scores while he also snagged 17 passes for 204 yards and two TDs; WR Patrick Bridges (6-2, 185, 4.6) who had 32 catches for 479 yards and 6 TDs; FB Juan Marines who had 33 carries for 134 yards; five catches for 75 yards and 2 TDs; OL JJ Wheeler (6-4, 240, 4.9); WR Quinton Murray (6-1, 175, 4/7); OL Toby Argo; OL Henry Dines; WR/DB Evan Garcia, WR Luca Sanchez; and WR Jordan Hernandez. Leading the defense will be Texas Tech commit DB Ashton Hampton (6-1, 170, 4.5) who had 40 solo stops, 13 as-sists, 12 TFL, 5 INTs, 2 fumble recover-ies, 1 caused fumble, DL Jaden Wincher (6-1, 250) who had 28 tackles, 3 TFL, 5 sacks, DL Jaylen Stewart (6-3- 205, 4.8), CB Lazarus Range who had 34 tackles, 14 assists, 2 TFL, 3 INTs, 1 caused fum-ble, and DL Amari Wilks. The Oilers will also have a talent-ed kicker in Jackson Stagg who was an All-District second-team selection. Stagg is an outstanding offensive weapon to have for field goals and extra points which can make the difference in a win or loss.

Life is measured by what you have learnedOne thing I have a hard time with is be-ing around people who seem to be so mis-erable. Do you know what I mean? When I think of that first sen-tence -- my mind imme-diately goes to a couple I saw a little over a year ago at a sporting event. I don’t know their names - but I have never seen them smile, but I sure have seen and heard how miserable they are by the way they have talked to others -- especially people they don’t know. I am a firm believer in laughter and making others laugh. It seems that no matter where I go -- I find myself around people who feel the same way. Yet - when
those who are miserable enter the room -- they continue to wear that scowl on their face and it doesn’t take long for them to feel uneasy in their surroundings and leave.Someone once said, “If you say you are happy -- then make sure you tell your face so others will know it.”I love the word “joy” and it should trans-late into happiness. But I have also learned that “joy” is an inside job. There is no way that you can express outward joy unless it begins inside your heart. You can’t manu-facture it. You certainly can’t be in a room full of people who have joy and try to fool others because those who have inside joy can spot a fake a mile away.My late mother-in-law was named Joy. My oldest daughter is named LeJoy - which means “The Joy!” And both have been a joy to my life for many years.I have spent years collecting things that
“I’ve learned...” Perhaps a few more will bring joy and peace to your life.I’ve learned... That money doesn’t buy class.I’ve learned... That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.I’ve learned... That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be ap-preciated and loved.I’ve learned... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.I’ve learned... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.I’ve learned... That love, not time, heals all wounds.I’ve learned... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.I’ve learned... That there’s nothing sweeter than holding your grandbabies and feeling their breath on your cheeks.I’ve learned... That no one is perfect un-
til you fall in love with them.I’ve learned... That when you harbor bit-terness, happiness will dock elsewhere.I’ve learned... That a smile is an inex-pensive way to improve your looks.I’ve learned... That I can choose how I feel.I’ve learned... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.I’ve learned... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs in the valley.Life is full of great lessons if only we remain open to learning no matter how old we get in life.Old friend Robert said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”E-mail: drdaviddavis@yahoo.comwww.reporternewssports.com Twitter: @drdavis111

“May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works— who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who reaches to the high mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. 34 May my medita-tion be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD. 35 But may sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more. Praise the LORD, my soul. Praise the LORD. - Psalm 104:31-35
What does one do once one has figured it out? When you learned to ride a bike, did you help your friend learn how to ride theirs? Sure, you did! When you fig-ured out how to grill a great steak or cook some fall-off-the-bones-melt-in-your-mouth baby back ribs… did you keep the secret to yourself? Of course not! You let everybody know! And what about that stock tip or 60% sale on that thing you knew a friend was looking for… you kept quiet, right? Nah! You texted them as soon as you found out! But, truth be told… most folks in our culture are far quicker to tell a neighbor or friend about the new electric
hybrid car sitting in their driveway than they are to share thoughts about the case for Christ and what a difference it makes to follow in the way of Jesus. Faith matters. And what about this faith of yours? Everyone believes in something. Is it a struggle? Have you figured it out? Do you have friends and family members who struggle with their faith? Because they haven’t figured it out? Is it as easy as riding a bike? Not always. Does it take an effort? Certainly! How many ribs did you burn before you got it right? Isn’t that why the point of “practicing our faith” is perfected by “practicing our faith?” Be-cause faith isn’t magic and we just don’t “POOF” (magic pixie dust kind of ‘poof”) ourselves into a deep relation-ship with God over a 4-day weekend… we practice our faith so when we need a faith, we have one that we can depend on… now, we’re talking… QUESTION: So, what does it take for the world to get its faith posture in good order? ANSWER: Repeat the sounding joy! You know like the repeat the sounding joy in the song… ‘Joy to the World” when the Lord has come! God knew the world needed to have the love of God… so the love of God
was brought to us by God in the flesh… by Jesus… The Emmanuel… the one we know as “God with us!” Have you ever looked carefully at the song, “Joy to the World”? Even though we sing it loud and proud at Christmastime… it wasn’t written as a Christmas song at all. It is based on Psalm 98 and particularly verses 4-9… go ahead… look it up… and the words point to the love and power, joy and purpose of God and how the whole world cannot keep silent… in fact, it really is a song about the mission of God’s people… that WE… repeat the sounding joy… to let the world know that God is love… and God’s love is trustworthy above all things… and the path of God (Jesus did say… “follow me!”) is a path that leads to righteousness and blessedness… not as brag or goal… but just the simple way God desires… The difficult part however is one cannot repeat the sounding joy if one doesn’t know or have any of the sounding joy the Psalmist speaks of… and this all proves true when we get to the third verse of the song… “No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow… Far as the curse is found… We repeat the sounding joy sim-ply because God’s joy replaces our sin and sorrow... al-ways... and his blessings we do claim… despite life’s difficulties… Yes! So… let’s repeat the sounding joy all Summer and all the way to Christmas! The Rev. Dr. Brian K. Gigee is a long-time resident of Pearland, having pastored four churches over the last four decades in Texas and Louisiana.
