2023-04-05 ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTESAnimal Shelter Advisory Committee – Apr 05, 2023 CITY OF PEARLAND, TEXAS ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING APRIL 5, 2023 The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee convened in a meeting on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the Shari D. Coleman Pearland Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Training Room, 8311 Freedom Drive, Pearland Texas. The following represents the actions taken by Animal Shelter Advisory Committee in the order they occurred during the meeting. I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. II. ROLL CALL AND CERTIFICATION OF QUORUM: All present – Chairperson DVM Catherine Cupples – Position 1, Patrick Savage – Position 2, John Fischer – Position 3, Amy Stroud – Position 4, and Mary Hickling – Position 5 III. CITIZEN COMMENTS: There were no citizen comments. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Discussion and possible action regarding minutes from the March 9, 2023 Emergency Meeting. Motion to accept by Member Savage, Seconded by Member Hickling. Unanimous vote to approve. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS 1. Election of Committee Officers: Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. Nomination of Member Cupples for Chairperson made by Member Fischer, Seconded by Member Stroud. Unanimous vote to appoint DVM Catherine Cupples as Chairperson. Nomination of Member Hickling for Vice Chairperson made by Member Fischer, Seconded by Member Cupples. Unanimous vote to appoint Mary Hickling as Vice Chairperson. 2. Staff Report from Animal Services Manager. “Statistics for 12/2/22 -4/1/23 In the period this report covers, 4 months, we saw a 28.6% decrease in the number of cat intakes from the public and a 10.5% decrease in dog intakes compared to the same period last year. Dog adoptions are up 39% compared last year during the same period. Cat adoptions are up 44.6% compared to last year during the same period. Animal Shelter Advisory Committee – Apr 05, 2023 Return to owner rates for dogs is at 38.4%YTD with cat RTO rates at about 6.6%. Rescue transfers for dogs are down by 18.5% YTD and cat transfers are up 160.5%. Rabies Update: 1 confirmed positive for rabies in the City for the period. Volunteer Program: Volunteers hours for the period have not been calculated at the time of this report. Staffing: We have one open Animal Services Supervisor position, 1 Animal Control Officer position and one temporary Custodial position open. We also had the reclassification of one Animal Control Officer position to a Programs Coordinator approved. That position will post soon. Training: All staff with the exception of one new hire have completed their Basic ACO and Certified Euthanasia Technician courses. Fischer will be teaching portions of the Basic ACO Course provided by the State again April. Social Media: We have increased followers of our Facebook page to 15,467 and it continues to be an important resource for getting pets adopted, into rescue and returned home. Foster Program: We currently have 2 dogs and 1 cat in foster homes. Capacity: Our inventory this time last year was 31 dogs and 45 cats. This year we have 89 dogs and 50 cats. We fluctuate between one and four open medium to large size kennels consistently. Currently cat space remains open.” VI.
