“So now Israel, what do you think GOD expects from
you? Just this: Live in his presence in holy reverence, follow
the road he sets out for you, love him, serve GOD, your
God, with everything you have in you, obey the command-
ments and regulations of GOD that I’m commanding you
today—live a good life.” - Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Here’s an old Hebrew story to make us think…
There was a rabbi whose days were long with having not
much life left in him. His name was Yeshua… the name we
would say out loud as… ‘Joshua!’Anew and younger rabbi
had now been chosen to walk with Yeshua in his final days
to meet the people and to learn of the details of daily life in
the synagogue. They talked of many things… the old and
sacred things of God and the things of what was to come.
‘Has this been a good life for you, rabbi?’asked the
younger scholar. ‘Yes, o yes!’ Yeshua responded quickly
and with a certain sense of satisfaction filled with a confi-
dent hope… ‘that’s good,’ the young rabbi replied. ‘Yes, it
is…’torted back Yeshua… ‘yet, I have just one worry.’The
younger rabbi looked stunned but heard the concern in
Yeshua’s voice. ‘What are you worried about? That when
you die and stand before God you will be asked… why
weren’t you more like Abraham?’Yeshua glanced back then
lowered his head… saying… ‘no, not that.’‘Are you wor-
ried God will ask you why you weren’t more like Moses or
one of the prophets?’the young rabbi continued… ‘No, I’m
not worried about that, either?’ said the dying old man…
‘I’m worried that when I stand before God… I will be
asked… why weren’t you… Yeshua?’
Great expectations. We all have them. God does, too, it
seems. From as far back as parents were having children…
there was always a hope their child would be… some-
body… be known… do good… and be remembered as
someone who made a difference… a recipe’ for both frus-
tration and failure if I ever heard one and it took until my
mid-20’s to finally learn my level of frustration was always
equal to and as high as my level of expectation and the only
way to reduce my frustration was to lower my expectations.
Whoah! And when it comes to expectations… I can honest-
ly admit that those of my parents along with my expecta-
tions of self… tacked to the holy expectations for us all…
are not so much unique, and varied but not that different at
all…
My parents wanted me to have a better education than
they did. I wanted to play college basketball. So, I came to
Texas. God wanted me to be a preacher and the only way
to make that happen was to get me to Texas and introduce
me to people who would encourage me to go to seminary
and eventually be a pastor. On the other hand… my grand-
mother wanted me to be happy… so maybe we’re all win-
ners here in this re-telling…but it must be said…many of
my fraternity brothers are still talking… almost fifty years
now…asking…“what was God thinking…?”when answer-
ing the question..‘is Gigee still a preacher?’ Faith matters.
We all disappoint God… all of us… despite our tapping
into the ways of God to make life much more manageable…
yet… I suspect that’s been the case since the man and the
woman tried to be God and the people of Babel tried to
build a tower to get to God. But, even so… God does not
lower the expectations. Why? The Bible over and over
says… “God will get it done for us…” my paraphrase of a
combination of many verses on both sides of Malachi and
Matthew… God’s great expectation reflecting eternal love
and grace and providing just cause for Jesus to come into
the world… God in the flesh… God in human form to
accomplish in dying what we cannot do and even refuse to
do for ourselves… and then there’s this… Jesus told his dis-
ciples something good for the world… “treat others as you
want others to treat you!” (Luke 6:31) … the greatest
expectation of all!
