STATE OF TEXAS RESOLUTION State of ru (c)..„1-E Opp (ens . moo, - t.{i is is RESOLUTION WHEREAS , Pearland is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2019, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to this proud Brazoria County community; and WHEREAS , The city was originally known as Mark Belt , in honor of a resident who once managed the vast tracts of grazing land owned by the Brazoria Land and Cattle Company; in the early 1890s , Polish nobleman Count Witold von Zychlinski purchased some 2 , 500 acres in the area, and on September 26 , 1894 , he filed a plat for a town to be named Pearland, due to the region's many pear trees ; and WHEREAS , Pearland was promoted by land companies in newspapers throughout the Midwest as a "Garden Paradise" and an "agricultural Eden, " and by 1898, it boasted two general stores , two hotels , and two lumber companies , as well as a newspaper , a hardware store , a blacksmith, and a grocer ; although the city's growth slowed after the hurricane of 1900 , the population boomed in the decades following the discovery of oil and gas in the area in 1934 ; and WHEREAS , Today, Pearland is a thriving community that benefits from its proximity to Houston and the beaches in Galveston; it was named an All-America City in 1999, and residents and visitors alike enjoy such attractions as the historic Gulf , Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad Depot , the Pearland Town Center , and the Sri Meenakshi Hindu Temple ; moreover , the city's educational needs are met by its highly rated public schools and the Pearland campus of the University of Houston-Clear Lake ; and WHEREAS , Celebrating their rich history as they work together to build a bright future , the citizens of Pearland may take justifiable pride in the role their unique community continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore , be it RESOLVED, That the 125th anniversary of Pearland be commemorated and that the city's residents be extended sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable celebration. i‘e9A1-' ,, Ed Thompson State Representative District 29 19R2664
