Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks,
Recreation and Beautification Board held Saturday, February
14, 1987, at the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty
Drive, Pearland, Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Pro-tem Larry
Juull with the following present: Inez Farmer, Tootie
McComb, Bob Pond, James Skipper, Claude Stegall, and
Director Barry Lastik. Barry reported George Triebel Jr.
was unable to attend.
Larry Juull presented the January Beautification Award to
Jim Mercer of Jim Mercer Insurance. The news media
recorded the event.
Herb Brown from the Krewe of Bonaparte presented a request
to use Independence Park after their Mardi Gras Parade on
February 28, 1987.
Jim Skipper, seconded by Inez Farmer, moved to give the
Krewe of Bonaparte and local community organizations taking
part in their activities permission to sell beer and use
the pavilion in Independence Park on February 28, 1987,
without fees, after the proper notification of Pearland
Police Department, appropriate City Parks Department
applications have been completed and presentation of the
beer sales license to City Parks Department. The motion
carried.
The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and
approved on the motion of Claude Stegall, seconded by James
Skipper, and the vote of the Board.
The Director presented the department reports and answered
questions. The majority of efforts were devoted to the the
removal of Christmas decorations and planting of Pine
trees, donated by Clean Pearland, behind the Chamber of
Commerce. These trees will be moved later and used in the
development of McLean park. Water fountains and score
booth are under construction at the ball field in
Independence Park.
There was some discussion of the use of the Parks late at
night but no action was taken.
No nominations for Beautification Awards were submitted.
In open discussion Barry reported that the basketball goals
in Independence Park were aligned with the play area.
Apparently the strong winds were the cause of the problem.
How to fund the Easter egg hunt activities is under
consideration. A contractor will pour the addition to the
play area slab in Sonny Tobias Park.
Bob Pond, seconded by Claude Stegall, moved to have George
Triebel ask Ron Wicker to attend the next meeting of the
February 14, 1987 MINUTES Page 2 of 2
Parks Board to discuss Parks project funding and
priorities. The motion passed without opposition.
Barry asked if anyone would consider serving on the
Pearland Clean Community Board representing the Parks
Board. Tootie McComb volunteered to serve. Inez Farmer
moved that Tootie McComb be appointed to represent the
Parks Board on the Clean Community Board. The motion was
seconded by Claude Stegall and the motion carried.
Tootie McComb and Bob Pond suggested that the dead trees at
the enterance of Independence Park near the Bar-B-Que
shelter be replaced.
Larry Juull reported that the KBCBA annual banquet was well
attended and the speakers topic was timely and well
received. Young people are using the basketball play areas
in every park.
The next meeting will be March 14, 1987.
Claude Stegall moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded
by Inez Farmer. The meeting adjourned.
