1988-09-10 PARKS RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES
Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation
and Beautification Board held Saturday, September 10, 1988, at
the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland
Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman George Triebel Jr.
with the following present: Inez Farmer, Larry Juull, Tootie
McComb, Bob Pond, James Skipper, Claude Stegall, Parks Director
Barry Lastik, Assistant City Manager Don Birkner and Councilman
Billy Wolff.
The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved on
the motion of Larry Juull, seconded by Claude Stegall, and the
vote of the Board.
During old business George introduced Pattie Bates of Clean
Pearland who described narrowed the scope of the State Highway
beautification projects into Phase I (north entrance to Pearland
on Highway 35) and Phase II (landscaping south on Highway 35).
She again requested our support in studying these projects.
A motion by Tootie McComb, seconded by Larry Juull, to join with
Clean Pearland in creating committees to study Clean Pearland
landscaping and beautification projects known as Phases I and II.
The motion carried. Barry will notify the Board concerning time
and location of the joint committee meetings.
Billy Wolff ask if any progress had been made toward getting a
cost estimate for a basketball play area in McLean Park. Barry
reported the cost to be $3800 for concrete and about $500 for
remaining items. There was considerable discussion as to the
location and how this area would fit into the master plan.
Don Birkner reported that he had toured McLean Park with a
representative of Brazoria Parks Commission Board. They are
interested in considering development of McLean Park as one of
their projects in the northern end of Brazoria county. McLean
would be one of about eleven sites under evaluation for
development. This park was acquired under a grant from the State
of Texas which means it was evaluated by the State for this
purpose and it may require some reimbursement to the State.
Larry Juull made a motion that the Board recommend to City
Council that the City explore the feasibility of transferring the
development of McLean Park to Brazoria Parks Commission. James
Skipper seconded the motion and the motion carried.
Barry reported that the operation of Independence Park Pool was
self-sustaining this year.
The Board commended Barry for the excellent management of the
City Pool facility.
Under new business the Parks department report will be combined
with the Director's report as Barry is managing both areas.
Watts Pool Co. will drain and perform warranty maintenance work
on the Pool as soon as possible. Mr. Wicker approved the
purchase of a bush hog for parks maintenance.
The Department received a thank you card for support from the
area churches who sponsored a concert in Independence Park.
The next meeting will be held October 8, 1988.
Larry Juull moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Tootie
McComb. The meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Pond, Secretary
