1989-01-14 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES
Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation
and Beautification Board held Saturday, January 14, 1989, at the
Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman George Triebel Jr.
with the following present: Inez Farmer, Larry Juull, Tootie
McComb, Bob Pond, Claude Stegall, Parks Director Barry Lastik and
Councilman Billy Wolff. Barry reported that James Skipper would
not be present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved on
the motion of Larry Juull, seconded by Inez Farmer, and the vote
of the Board.
During old business Barry reported that the "No Glass Containers
Allowed in the Park" signs have been installed through out the
park.
Inez Farmer made a motion, seconded by Larry Juull, that the
Board support Monty Stanley of the Alvin Parks Department who is
hosting the Special Olympics Area 22 1989 Spring Games from 9
a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday April 22, 1989. The motion
carried.
Barry reported on his research into the feasibility of providing
an ice skating special event in Independence Park during the 1989
Christmas season. It appears to be impractical. The Board
considered the report to be very thorough.
Barry presented a comparison report covering the Parks Department
income and expense figures for 1987 and 1988. The income seems
to be tracking the local economy and the expenses have also been
reduced.
During new business Barry reported on the various department
activities. The majority of the efforts were toward installing
picnic table covers in Independence Park. The playground
equipment located in Corrigan North Park has rotted out and must
be replaced.
Inez Farmer made a motion that the playground equipment removed
in Corrigan North Park not be replaced at this time due to lack
of usage. That the money be used to install a playground unit on
the City property on Parkview Street. The motion was seconded by
Larry Juull and the motion carried.
Barry requested the Board study Independence Park usage fee
structure and be prepared to discuss it at the next meeting.

The Board gave a resounding second to the letter of commendation
for outstanding performance sent to Barry Lastik by the Assistant
City manager.
During open discussion it was brought to the attention of the
Board that no meetings have been scheduled by Clean Pearland
regarding the Beautification Projects they are sponsoring.
Barry and Tootie indicated that additional security and safety
patrols are required in Independence Park.
The annual Easter Egg hunt in Independence Park will be held
March 25, 1989.
Barry indicated he was approached by some men trying to start a
JCs organization in Pearland and are seeking support.
Barry and Tootie attended a meeting of citizens sponsoring the
development of hike and bike trails in Pearland.
Larry Juull made a motion, seconded by Tootie McComb, to name the
property the city will use as a park on Parkview Drive as Aaron
Pasternak Park and that a letter requesting Council concurrence
be forwarded. The vote was unanimous.
There were no special request or nominations for beautification
awards this month.
The next meeting will be held February 11, 1989.
Claude Stegall moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded by
Tootie McComb. The meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
