1989-10-14 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES
Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation and
Beautification Board held Saturday, October 14, 1989, at the Pearland
Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland, Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman George Treibel with the
following members present: Larry Juull, Tootie McComb, Claude Stegall,
Parks Superintendent Barry Lastik and Councilmember Billy Wolff. Members
Bob Pond and Inez Farmer were absent.
Representatives of Salem Village and Silver Maples Apartments were
present to receive awards for continuing beautification efforts. Members
of the local press were present to photograph the presentation.
Items of old business were reviewed and discussed. Councilman Wolff
discussed his efforts to evaluate the difficulty between two citizen
groups sharing the use of the Melvin Knapp Activity Building. (Pearland
Area Senior Citizens and AARP). It appears that more space is required
and the council will consider possible solutions at a workshop meeting.
Plans for continuation of the proposed walk to Independence Park were
discussed and generally agreed that plans could be made as soon as
actual work begins on the walk leading to the park. The Board had
questions about the financial control of "The Hike and Bike Trail"
fund controlled by the Clean Pearland organization.
Councilman Wolff discussed status of drainage ditch right-of-way around
Independence Park. Part of the solution would be to re-route the current
drainage ditch and surround the park on the south and east with a
drainage ditch to drain the new High School property.
Barry reviewed the printed Superintendent's Report, Financial Report,
and Community Center Activity Report and answered Board questions.
Tootie McComb recommended a sustained beautification award for Anchor
Plaza.
Larry Juull moved to change the November meeting to the 18th to avoid
conflict with the Holiday. Tootie McComb seconded the motion, the
motion carried.
Billy Wolff asked for clarification of fee for use of the building
by the High School cheerleaders (Pearland Jr. High School Spirit Club).
The fee structure indicates reduced fee or if they can arrange to use
available space while other events are occuring, the use might be free.
Claude Stegall moved to adjourn, Tootie McComb seconded the motion
and the meeting adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted,
Bob Pond
