1990-02-10 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation and Beautification Board held Saturday, February 10, 1990, at the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland Texas. The meeting was called to order by Chairman George Triebel with the following present: Inez Farmer, Larry Juull, Tootie McComb, Bob Pond, James Skipper, Claude Stegall, Parks Superintendent Barry Lastik and Council Liaison Billy Wolff. Representatives of the Pearland Independent School District and the First National Bank were present to accept continuing beautification efforts awards. The local press was present to photograph the presentations. The minutes of the previous meeting stand approved on the motion of Larry Juull and second of Inez Farmer. During old business Brad Turner of the Boy Scouts of America presented details of the security plan to be used at the Jamboree in Independence Park. Larry Juull moved to grant the special request by the Boy Scouts of America to use Independence Park for an overnight Jamboree on March 23 through 25, 1990. Tootie McComb seconded the motion and the motion carried. The Board liked the new Parks Board Letter Head developed by Barry, the only change requested was to include the Parks Superintendent's name. He indicated he would consider it at the next printing. Barry and Inez reported on the status of the Melvin Knapp Activity Building expansion. A workshop was held where the majority of those in attendance opted for an addition toward Grand Blvd. with parking on the side. This plan has not been presented to Council. Tootie McComb reported that Jim Sedillia the current chairman of Clean Pearland's hike and bike committee and representative of. the Parkview subdivision went before Council and requested that the sidewalk from Shady Bend to Independence Park be of concrete. The Council agreed and requested that a sidewalk along the street at Aaron Pasternak Park be included. Billy Wolff reported that the right-of-way in front of the private school had been acquired and that it would be desirable to acquire some of an oversized lot next to the private school and move the existing fence. During new business Barry reported on the various department activities. The majority of the efforts were toward removing the playground equipment from Woodcreek Park and investigating a leak in the swimming pool filter system. Page 1 of 2 The Easter Egg Hunt will be April 14, 1990 and Barry is considering adding a babes in arms area south of the swimming pool sidewalk. During open discussion Barry reported that the Council approved the bid package for the basketball court in McLean Park which will be built such that it can be used as part of the pavilion when it is completed per the McLean Park master plan. Barry distributed a copy of the Houston Chronicle on that topic. Additional unbudgeted funds will be required to repair or replace the swimming pool filter system, this matter will be taken up with the City Manager. Claude Stegall requested that upon completion of the McLean Park basketball court that the basketball goals in Sonny Tobias Park be lowered for smaller children. Billy Wolff requested that the Park name plate in Sonny Tobias Park be raised above ground level. No new information is available on the abolishment of waiver of fees for the Community Center on weekends. There were no nominations for beautification awards this month.
