1990-04-14 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES
Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation and
Beautiication Board held Saturday, April 14, 1990, at the Pearland
Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland, Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman George Triebel with the
following members present: Inez Farmer, Larry Juull, Tootie McComb,
and James Skipper. Members Bob Pond and Claude Stegall were absent.
Director Barry Lastik was still hospitalized from recent surgery.
Council members Wolff and Miller were present as well as other guests.
Robert Harris, President of the Pearland Jaycees, accompanied by Pam
Francis, a member, discussed the purposes of the Jaycees and some of
the goals of the local Jaycee Chapter and requested approval to use
Independence Park for a Jaycee sponsered Founders' Day as a community
service project. He gave some general descriptions of their plans for
this year which include a parade. He hopes to have a nationally known
parade marshall to lead the parade. He was asked to bring a more
detailed project plan for consideration by the Board.
Doris Wood of the Pear Tree Chapter, ABWA, requested a waiver of fee
for use of the Community Center on the 29th for a Fashion Show. Larry
Juull, seconded by Inez Farmer, moved to grant the waiver of fee
providing the group agrees to pay any cost of use of the Center beyound
the agreed upon hours.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved on the motion of
Larry Juull.
Council member Wolff presented the status of work on expanding the
Melvin Knapp Community Building. The property to the north is being
deeded to the City. The building will be expanded to the north. This
was reported by Jim Deshazer who joined the meeting for a brief period
of time.
Tootie McComb reported that citizens, especially those from the
Corrigan subdivision, are writing in support of a hike and bike trail
to provide better access to Independence Park. The Hike and Bike Trail
Committee has not met in recent 'days, but is scheduled to meet soon.
Work is continuing to replace the filters at the pool in time to open
by June 1st. The Board has been asked to consider a cover for the pool
so that it can be used in winter for high school students interested in
a swim team.
Larry Juull nominated Popeye's for the May Beautification Award and
Captain D's for the June Beautification Award. Tootie McComb seconded
the nominations. The Board voted approval.
During general discussion, George reported that the Special Olympics
request help for girls' events on Sunday, April 22nd. Mr. Wolff said
that a sidewalk for Pasternak Park will be poured when the basketball
court poured in McLain Park. Tootie suggested that First Aid supplies,
and a person trained in their use, be included on all Senior Citizen
trips sponsored under City Recreational Activities.
Larry Juull moved to adjourn and the Board adjourned to the Easter Egg
Hunt at Independence Park.
