Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearlgnd Parks. Recreation
and Beautilicg_tion Bogrd held Saturday, July 14, 1990, at the
Pgarland CgyMnity Center, 3523 Liberty Drive. Pearland Texas.
The meeting was called to -order by Chairman George Triebel with
Toot-& McComb, Bob• -Pond# parks Superintendent Assistant Vita
Moore. and Counci-l-.. Liaison B&I-ly Wolff present. George reported
that James Skipper, Inez.Farmer, Claude Stegall, Larry Juull-and
Parks Superintendent Barry-Lastik would be absent.
A representative of St. Stephen, Lutheran Church -was present to
accept the July beautificationaward.- George p=ammmted Reta
Absher a plaque in appreciation, of her continued volunteer work
In landscaping areas within the City Parks. The local press was
present to photograph the presentations.
The minutes of the previous meeting stand approvedon= the motion
of Tootie McComb and second of Bob Pond.
Due to several members being on vacation the meeting was -Halt"'.
toreportsand status of the various projects.
During old business Vita Moore reported that the Independence
Park softball scoreboasd installation was complete. The McLean
basketball court -14ghting, was put on a timer which will enable
the switch = to activate the lights at 7:30 P.M. and turn off at
11:00-P.M. and it was reported- to police that cars werw spinning
out on the new basketball court. Tootie noticed, -the lights
turned off at 9:00 P.M**,°< -and requested it be investigated. Bob
Pond requested that the grade be level with the slab on the west
side of the basketball -court to prevent twisted ankle injury and
the weeds and tree limbs be remove from the east side of the
slab.
The Melvin Knapp Activity Center expansion architecture is almost
complete and the bid package will go out as soon as the
financing method has been defined.
Tootie reported that the Hike and Bike committee met this month
and the route between McLearv-and Independence Parks will cross
HWY 35 at John Lizer and continue down John Lizer until it meets
with the sidewalk into independence�:Park. Mfforts by: the City
to acquire the right-of-way required -to build a sidewalk from the
Community Center to Independence Park am, continuing. The
sidewalk in front of Pasternak Park is being, :handled by the City
Manager.
Development of Pasternak Park using donated funds in under way
with the picnic tables and the water fountain on hand. Tootie
requested a picture of the fountain be taken for the new paper to

Bob Pond requested the tople=of Security during Community Center
rental .where alcohol: is prasent be -tabled for a future meeting at
which time the staff -would present.,a recommendation.
The staff is currently not authorizing waiver (v thr**trare
exceptions) of fees for the Community Center usa ®n +�aNcs�lAs.
Defining the location of a new largeplaygroundapparatus within
Corrigan North Park or elsewhere was tabled until next meeting.
A line item was included in the PY-91 budget to finance the first
year of efforts to develop McLean Park under a State Grant.
During new business Vitae reported on the vor`lous department
activities. The majority of the effort were ow bowing, swimming
pool maintenance, basketball court installation in McLean and the
Installation of the Softball Field Score Board, donated by HSB.
During open discussion Billy, Wolff requested that the two dead
pole trees in the esplanade of-AimBlvd. be replaced or removed
and that he is still pursuing the acquisition of an artillery
piece forIndependence Park.
Bob Poor ,reported that he is still surveying- the Clear Creek and
Twin Creek Woods subdivision residents about > their noi-ghborhood
park. Security.and maintenance appear to be the big problems. If
the park is not secure the people will not al -low -their children
to use it unsupervised. He suggested a closed grits be installed
to keep cars out of the park at all t1m**-,-an hours of usage sign
be posted and thot It be choaned up. If enough younger children
would use the park a puce , of playgrov ed- equipment might be in
order.
The next meeting will be held Augus:t-ll,,. 10" at Szoo.&4w
Tootie McComb moved to adjourn. The motion was. seconded by Bob
Pond and the meeting adjourned.
