1991-10-12 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMinutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation and Beautification Board held Saturday, October 12, 1991, at the Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland, Texas. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry Juull with Vince Bruno, Suzanne Elliott, Retta Absher, Tootie McComb, James Skipper, Inez Farmer, Gary Walters, Parks Superintendent Barry Lastik, and Council Member D. A. Miller present. Barry reported that member Bob Pond had an excused absence. Larry Moser of Moser Auto Sales was present to recieve a Beautification Award. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved on the motion of Vince Bruno and second of Gary Walters Barry reported that he had met with representives of a playgound equipment company to consider pieces for Independence Park. The company does not plan to donate equipment, but might sell one piece at cost. Retta Absher will help collect Beautification Award Plaques to be engraved and returned to the recipients. The Board reviewed the letter which had been sent to the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in response to their request to use the Community Building for meetings while they build a new building in the area. The letter informed them of the policy for long term rental of the building. Barry reported that the City plans to have a Christmas Tree at City Hall again this Christmas. The Chamber of Commerce will not sponser "Santa Comes to Pearland" this year. There were no definite suggestions for an alternate arrangement. Board Members Bob Pond, James Skipper, and Tootie McComb have been reappointed to the Board for three-year terms. The Board reviewed a request from the Peartree Chapter of the ABWA for a reduced rate for renting the Community Building. Tootie volunteered to tell them that our current policy will allow their use of the building on Sunday at the reduced rate. Council Member Miller said that he would see if Community Services funds are to be used for Christmas decorating. He also discussed the funds to be recieved from recycling. Members were given copies of the city survey report and were asked provide comments on the report at the next meeting. Barry has checked on the situations at Sonny Tobias and Twin Creek Parks. A locked gate will be used at Twin Creeks to keep vehicles out of the park. A sign will be installed to that effect. There is still no clear solution for the late hour use of Sonny Tobias Park by persons from outside the neighborhood. Various suggestions were passed on to the City staff for consideration. Twelve Live Oaks were planted around the inner circle of Independence Park. The trees were donated by Dane Cessac of Pearland Printing. Retta, Larry, and Barry were at the tree planting. The High School Environmental Club helped plant the trees. $58,000 has been budgeted for resurfacing the pool. Several members had conflicts on the date of the next regular meeting and it was agreed to delay the meeting one week to the 16th. Suzanne Elliot, seconded by Vince Bruno, moved to adjourn the meeting until November 16th.
