Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation
and Beautification Board held d Saturday,_ June 8� 1991, at

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry JUull with
Chairman Pro -term Retta Absher, Vince Bruno, Suzanne Elliott, Inez
Farmer, Toot i e McComb, Secretary Bob Fend, James Skipper, Gary
Walters, Parks Superintendent Barry Lastik:, Council Liaison D.A.
Miller, Councilman Billy Wolff, Councilman Benny Frank: and Mayor
Vic Coppinger present.
Larry reported that there was not enough Beards members at the
May meeting for a quorum.
The minutes of the previous meeting(April) were approved on the
motion of Tootie McComb and second of Inez Farmer.
Larry introduced thie Mayer who reported on several topics of
interest to thle Board. These included development of McLean
Park, addition to the Melvin Knapp Activities Center, Hurricane
Flan, the City Charter concerning the creation of the Board, 1991
Fourth of July Celebration, trees around the perimeter of
Independence Park and the age range of playground equiprilent in
Rotary Park.
During old business Barry reported that the McLean Park: Phase II
development matching grant has been submitted to the City Manager
who will call a council workshop to study the request prior to
approval and submission to the State.
The installation of a sidewalk from Shadybend to Independence
Park: has been contracted out and is underway.
Development of Pasternak Park using donated funds is complete. A
picture will be taken for the news paper. A picture of Corrigan
North should also be included in the article about citizen
donations to the parks.
The pool is open and the May attendance is encouraging.
Toot i e McComb trade a motion to recommend and forward the fees and
deposits changes proposed, by the Parks Superintendent, to City
Council for adoption. The motion was seconded by James Skipper
and the motion carried.
During new business
Barry presented the
Departmental
reports.
The
majority
of the
efforts were can budget
preparation,
revising
the
McLean
grant,
started new program (modeling
class),
distrubuting
the Spring/Summer Program Brc11--hure,
preparing the
pool
for the
swimming season, grass mowing
and routine operations
and
maintenance. A
seniors dance (Hawaiian
Lauau) was
sponsored
and
supported
by the
Dept.

The FY-92 Parks Dept. Capital
Outlay Budget was reviewed.
The
Beard had only positive comments
on the
budget. nary Walters
and
Benny Frank: suggested that the
expense
for the pedestrian trail
within Independence Park: from
the new
pedestrian bridge to
the
Pool sidewalk: could be reduced
by two
thirds if it were made
of
hike and bike type material rather
than
concrete.
The funds should be available in time for submitting the McLean
Park grant application by July of 1991.
There were no Beautification Award nominations this month. Barry
suggested that Vita prepare a list of businesses eligible for the
sustaining beautification awards.
During open discussion Retta Absher requested the Dept. acquire a
Helium tank to blew up party balloons. Barry indicated that Mr.
Colson has offered his tank: to the Dept. when needed.
Vin-_e Bruno requested that the leaky water fau-_ets in
Independence Park: be repaired.
Barry will review the quantity 1:1f trash containers in
Independence Park:.
The Mayer reported that a Radio Contrc,lled Airplane group was
interested in using McLean Park:. Bob Fond offered to look into
the requirements and liabilities of providing a facility.
Billy Wolff requested that Barry review the playground equipment
in Rotary Park: and that required for a Kiddy Park within McLean
Park. Billy indicated that he would take any reCOrt-smendaticIn
regarding new equipment to the Rotary Club.
Vita will make a Fourth of July fireworks donation thermometer to
be placed on the Lions Club property at the intersection of East
Walnut and Broadway.
Gary Walters requested that some trees be planted in McLean Park.
Barry suggested that we wait until the construction is complete.
He also indicated that trees being removed from Clear Creek: and
Country Club Drive will be put in Pasternak: Park:.
Bob Pend reported that the Clear Creek: and Twin Creeks Wooks
neighborhood park:: was a mess and should be cleaned up. He
invited the Board members visit the Park.
The next meeting will be held July 13, 1991 at 9:00 a.m.
Toot i. e McComb moved to adjourn. The motion was sec ended by
Vince Bruno and the meeting adjourned.
