Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Pearland Parks, Recreation
and Beautification Board held Saturday, February 9, 1991, at the
Pearland Community Center, 3523 Liberty Drive, Pearland Texas.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry Juull with
Vince Bruno, Suzanne Elliott, Inez Farmer, Tootie McComb,
Secretary Bob Pond, James Skipper, Gary Walters, Parks
Superintendent Barry Lastik, Council Liaison D.A. Miller and
Councilman Billy Wolff present. Chairman Pro-tem Retta Absher
was absent.
The minutes of the previous meeting stand approved on the motion
of Tootie McComb and second of Vince Bruno.
During old business Barry indicated that past Chairman George
Triebel was unable to attend the meeting and will be recognized
for his service by the Board at a later date.
A chain and lock have been installed at the entrance of Twin
Creeks Woods Neighborhood Park to keep cars from entering the
area providing some additional security.
The Board approved a preliminary draft of a letter to the City
Manager requesting 1) clarification between the city ordinance
and the by-laws concerning the election of chairman. 2) that the
City tree made of lights located at the corner of East Walnut and
HWY 518 be included in the Christmas decorations next year and
that if a real tree is to be used in front of City Hall that it
be planted for that purpose. 3) how the Wal-Mart donation was
allocated. 4) clarification of the request to deny rental of the
Community Center on Christmas and New Years Eve on a continuing
basis.
The installation of a sidewalk from Shadybend to Independence
Park will have to be re -bid.
During new business Barry presented the Departmental reports.
Barry is researching alternatives for the re -surfacing of the
Independence Park swimming pool.
The majority of the efforts were on Christmas decorations,
preparing the softball field for seasonal play, maintaining flags
on Liberty Drive, seniors dance and routine operations and
maintenance.
Development of Pasternak Park using donated funds is under way
with the water fountain being the remaining item to be installed.
The method of funding, census report and approval by the Council
are required prior to submitting the McLean Park development
matching fund grant application for the development of McLean
Park to the State of Texas.

Larry ask the Board to consider a special request for the use of
the Community Center on a continuing basis.
The Worldwide Church of God requested the use of the Community
Center on May 25, September 14, and November 23, 1991 at the
regular full rental rate.
Tootie McComb, seconded by Vince Bruno, moved to approve the
request. The motion carried.
Inez Farmer made a motion to approve the absence of Suzanne
Elliott on January 9, 1991. James Skipper seconded the motion and
the motion carried.
There were no Beautification Award nominations this month.

During open discussion Barry indicated the Easter Egg Hunt will
take place in Independence Park on March 30, 1991 at 10:00 AM
sharp. The Department will make silhouettes of children color
coded by age to direct them to the designated hunting areas.
There was some discussion concerning the coordination of Clean
Pearland beautification activities with the Pearland Parks &
Beautification Board.
Billy Wolff requested that Barry supply him with funding
requirement details concerning the McLean Park Grant Request, the
type of pedestrian bridge barricade system that would be adequate
for three new entrances into Independence Park from the southeast
side and if it would be a problem to install a shelf system along
the bank of Mary's Creek within McLean park to help retain water
during flooding conditions in the Corrigan subdivision.
The next meeting will be held March 9, 1991 at 9:00 a.m.
Tootie McComb moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded by James
Skipper and the meeting adjourned.
