2017-05-11 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESMINUTES — REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND PARKS, RECREATION, & BEAUTIFICATION BOARD, HELD ON THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2017 AT 8:15 A.M., AT 4141 BAILEY ROAD, PEARLAND, TX 77584. I CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 8:17 a.m. II. BOARD MEMBER ROLL CALL Buck Stevens Chair Ted Mittica Co Chair Mike Wilson Board Member Layni Cade Board Member Vicky Smith Board Member Bethany Earl Board Member Chris Orlea Parks & Recreation, Director Carry Capers Parks & Recreation, Assistant Director III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — April 13, 2017 With no objections, minutes were approved unanimously. IV. BOARD REPORT Mr Stevens noted he has been attending City Council meetings. Mr. Stevens also noted he has been promoting the naming rights opportunity around the community. Mr. Stevens explained he reached out to both the Pearland Rotary Club and the Lion's Club. Ms. Smith noted she hasn't made progress with Premiere. Ms. Smith also talked about Earth Day and attendance being lower this year than last. Mr. Orlea noted, according to our counts, the attendance was larger this year than last year. Ms. Smith also noted that she received questions about Earth Day taking in west Pearland. Mr. Capers explained there is a larger opportunity for exposure at the park it was held at this year, which increased attendance. Ms. Capers also noted once Independence Park is renovated, Earth Day will move to this location. Ms. Smith also noted she was able to see the Pear Run, and said the races started before they were due to start. Mr. Mittica has been attending the planning sessions for Celebration of Freedom on July 4, and is looking forward to the event this year. Mr. Mittica also reported working Concerts in the Park, and requested a shade structure, or screen to block the afternoon sun Mr. Orlea offered to speak with the Mychal, our Special Events Coordinator, about putting up something to assist with the glare. Ms Earl noted she was asked by a citizen why the pavilion at Southdown Park faces North instead of South because it's difficult to watch their children. Mr. Orlea noted the City did not build the structure; it was originally meant to be an athletics complex and is now green space. Mr. Orlea also noted is was intended to be an area for spectators to watch games; this is why it does not face the play area. Ms. Cade talked about the Easter Egg Hunt for Wood Creek residents and asked if it should be opened up to the City. Mr. Orlea noted is up to the discretion of the Wood Creek HOA. Mr. Orlea offered to put it on the City website to get out to the public, if desired. V DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Orlea reported on the following: • FY 17 & 18 Budget will go out to the Board for review and discussion at the next Parks Board meeting • New Division: 555 Recreation Operations/Programming • TML will reimburse the City $52,000 due to fire caused by pool pumps • Requested to Council shade structures for Shadow Creek Ranch • Formal invitations to the groundbreaking of Independence Park going out next week • New staff: Steven Coker, Aquatics Specialist; Aracelli Cerda, Adaptive Recreation Specialist; Audrey Flowers, Recreation Specialist.
