1996-09-19 PARKS, RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD MINUTESSEPTEMBER 1996 MINUTES 1000MINUTES AS RECORDED OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND PARKS RECREATION AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD HELD ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 1996, AT 7:00 P.M., AT THE PEARLAND COMMUNITY CENTER, 3523 LIBERTY DRIVE, PEARLAND, TEXAS. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M., with the following present: Bill Chase Chairman Retta Absher Board Member John Duston Board Member Nell Fuller Board Member Rosella Webb Board Member Edward Hersh Director of Parks & Recreation Absent from the meeting, Board Members Bobby Stevener and Vince Bruno. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Rosella Webb made a motion to accept the minutes of the August 19, 1996, Board Meeting as presented. The motion was seconded by Nell Fuller. Motion approved 5-0. PARK BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT: Bill Chase reported that while at Centennial Park he had an opportunity to see the Park Ambassadors program in action and he was very impressed. DIRECTORS REPORT: LERN Recognition - Ed reported that the Department received national recognition from Learning Resources Network for the cover of our Spring 1996 Brochure. LERN is the foremost expert in consulting for continuing education and park and recreation programs in the country. We work very closely with this organization in seeking different ways to improve our programs. We were selected for the cover of the month for L$RN's newsletter which is sent monthly to all members. As LERN is an international organization, we also received recognition in seven foreign countries. 1 Dog Trot - Ed announced that Saturday September 21 the Department will hold its Second Annual Dog Trot at 10:00 A.M., in Independence Park. Punt, Pass & Kick Contest - Tuesday, September 24 the Department will hold its Second Annual Punt, Pass & Kick Competition at 3:45 P.M., in Independence Park. Kid's Fish Fest - The Third Annual Kid's Fish Fest will be held Saturday, October 12, at the Independence Park Pool. The pool will be stocked with catfish. Hyde Park Planting - Volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints planted begonias at the park entry sign at Hyde Park. Winterfest '97 - The Department is working on a special event which will be held in Independence Park sometime in January, 1997. Nicole Pressler, Recreation Specialist, is coordinating this event. More information will be forthcoming. Youth Sports Symposium - The Second Annual Youth Sports Symposium is scheduled for February 17, 1997. This year the P.I.S.D. has consented to allow Dr. Joel Fish to speak to the physical education and coaching staff during their teacher in-service day. That evening we will host a program for the public at the Community Center. Personnel - The Department is currently seeking to fill two positions; a parks maintenance worker, and Park Superintendent/Urban Forester. ROW Mowing - Beginning the first of the fiscal year, the Department will be in charge of mowing all City right of ways, which was previously done by the street department. We have acquired two crew men and several pieces of equipment from the street department which will benefit our crews in mowing the larger parks. Clean Pearland - On Monday, October 21, Clean Pearland will hold it's annual dinner and installation of officers. Since Clean Pearland has been very supportive of the Parks Department it is encouraged that the Park Board members attend this function. By special request the Park Board meeting will meet at 6:30 P.M., in order that those interested may attend this function. COMMITTEE REPORTS: None. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: None. 2 NEW BUSINESS: Resolution in Support of Independence Park Re -development - A resolution has been drafted by the Park Board to encourage Council to proceed with the re -development of Independence Park. Retta Absher made a motion to accept the resolution and forward it on to City Council. The motion was seconded by Rosella Webb. Motion approved 4 - 1, with Nell Fuller voting no. Appointment of Nomination Committee - Bill Chase appointed a committee to nominate officers for the new fiscal year consisting of Vince Bruno, John Duston, and Rosella Webb. OTHER BUSINESS: None. ADJOURNMENTS: Nell Fuller made a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded by Rosella Webb. Motion approved 5-0. Meeting adjourned at 7:10 P.M.
