MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND PARKS RECREATION
AND BEAUTIFICATION BOARD HELD ON MONDAY JANUARY 15 1996
AT 7:00 P.M. AT THE PEARLAND COMMUNITY CENTER 3523 LIBERTY DR.
PEARLAND TEXAS.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M.,

Rosella Webb made a motion to accept the minutes of the November 13,
1995 Board Meeting as presented. The motion was seconded by
Larry Wilkins.
Motion approved 5-0.
EXCUSED ABSENCE
Larry Wilkins made a motion to excuse the absence of Retta Absher
from the second half of the November 131 1995 Board Meeting. The
motion was seconded by Bobby Stevener.
Motion approved 5-0.
Discussion was held regarding the guidelines of excused absences, and
the penalties of three (3) or more absences.
PARK BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
Bill Chase discussed the negative newspaper ad that C. L. Strickland
ran in the Pearland Reporter regarding the Kid Fishing events.
He reported that he called Mr. Strickland in an attempt to discourage
him from running the ad the following week. Mr. Strickland expressed
that he was upset with the City and Ed Hersh, and that he would to
run the ad as written. Mr. Strickland agreed not to repeat this
action next year.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Arbor Day Celebration- Ed announced a special Arbor Day Celebration
will be held at 10:00 A.M., January 20, 19961 at the Community
Center. Clean Pearland will give away free tree seedlings. Also,
in honor of this day, a tree will be planted at the Police
Department.
Historical Society Donation- The Historical Society donated four more
trees (making a total of eleven) to be planted at the Old Settler's
Cemetery.
Winter Classes- Winter classes began January 8, 1996. Enrollment has
increased and the numbers will be available at the next Park Board
meeting. Staff is in the process of working on the Spring '96
schedule of classes.
Kid's Fish Fest 1996- Saturday, January 20, 1996, the Department will
hold it's Second Annual Kid Fish Fest '96, at the Independence Park
Pool. Ricky Bort, Pearland Police Detective, and Athletic/Aquatic
Supervisor Kate Brasko are organizing this event which will have
local kids fishing for catfish from the pool.
Community Band- Ed reported on the formation of the Pearland
Community Concert Band which will have it's organization meeting
Thursday, January 18, 1996. The band will be under the direction of
Sam Matzas and membership is open to the public. Mr. Matzas has a
degree in music and played with the big bands of the 1950's and
1960's. The band will perform at various City functions and
celebrations.
Youth Sports Symposium- Ed announced that during the weekend of
February 23-24, the Parks and Recreation Department along with
Memorial Hospital Southeast, P. I. S. D., and Dr. Mary Campbell -Fox,
will co -host a Youth Sports Symposium. The symposium will relate to
the mental health and emotional impact of youth sports. Dr. Joel
Fish, Sports Psychologist, will be leading the seminar along with Dr.
Deborah Gant, local Pediatrician. The cost of the seminar is being
underwritten by Memorial Hospital Southeast.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Committee Report on Names for Centennial Park Pavilions:
The committee consisting of Nell Fuller, Bobby Stevener, and Larry
Wilkins presented the first reading on the selection of names for
the two Centennial Park pavilions:
1) Oiler Pavilion
2) Buffalo Pavilion
Discussion was held and Larry Wilkins made a motion to accept the
names for the pavilions as presented. The motion was seconded by
Nell Fuller.
The motion passed 5-1, with Retta Absher voting no.

OTHER BUSINESS•
Ed reported that City Council has approved the Independence Park
Concept Plan, and the next step is to research potential funding
sources and grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife. The park will be
constructed in phases, with the first phase being the development of
the water retention pond followed by the pool.
Bobby Stevener discussed the potential of the Lions Club supporting
a specific division of the park.
ADJOURNMENT:
Rosella Webb made a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was
seconded by Larry Wilkins.
Motion approved, 6-0.
The next meeting will be held February 19, 1996.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45 P.M.
