NEW BUSINESS
V98-14, REQUEST OF CORKEY L. TUNER, AGENT FOR CASA OLE RESTAURANT, FOR
A VARIANCE FROM SECTION 20.3.(a), TO NOT PROVIDE THE REQUIRED CLASS I AND
CLASS II TREES, AT 3100 E. BROADWAY
Mr. Turner stated that he thinks the landscape looks great. He explained that at some time during the
project he asked the architect to redraw the landscape plans to maintain the Southwest appearance of
the restaurant. However, he added, the new landscape plan was somehow never submitted to the City
for approval. Mr. Turner stated that the existing landscape does provide a barrier between the location
and the street as the ordinance requires.
Board Member Suzanne Tullis asked Mr. Turner if he had not been aware of the landscape ordinance.
r 1
Mr. Turner explained that an original landscape plan was drawn on the building plans by the architect.
However, he thought that the architect just drew those in. He didn't realize that changing that
op. landscaping would cause a problem.
Mr. Joe Valez, landscaper for Mr. Turner, and the Board discussed the different types of plants they
had planted.
Board Member Suzanne Tullis asked how long the supports would have to remain on the palm trees.
Mr. Valez stated the supports would remain for approximately eight (8) months.
Board Member Marvin Elam asked if there was some reason other than aesthetics that Mr. Turner chose
to use palm trees. Mr. Elam asked if Mr. Turner had ever heard of any detrimental problems with
palms, such as rats, etc.
Mr. Valez answered Mr. Elam by stating that only certain types of palms with plants or a berm placed
too closely to the palm will cause such problems. He explained that the Bradford Pear trees and the
crepe myrtles were added to meet the original plan. However, he added, that the Bradford Pear trees
have no real value and the crepe myrtles become dormant. He stated that all of the other plants are
evergreens.
Board Member Suzanne Tullis made a motion, seconded by Board Chairman Calvin Collier, Jr., to
approve V98-14.
Motion passed 5 to 0.
