MINUTES AS RECORDED OF THE MEETING OF THE CITY OF PEARLAND
PARKS, RECREATION AND BEATIFICATION BOARD HELD ON MONDAY
JANUARY 20, 1997, AT 7:00 P.M., AT THE PEARLAND COMMUNITY CENTER,
3523 LIBERTY DRIVE, PEARLAND TEXAS.
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 P.M., with the following present:

Edward Hersh Director of Parks & Recreation
Special guests, Police Detective Ricky Bort and Police Chief, Mike Hogg.
Absent from the meeting, Board Member Rosella Webb, (called in advance to say she was
unable to attend).
Vince Bruno made a motion to excuse Lisa Diese for her absence of October 21, 1996.
The motion was seconded by Bobby Stevener.
Motion approved 6-0.
Request was made to call each board member the day of the meeting as a reminder of the
meeting.
Motion approved 6-0.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Vince Bruno made a motion to accept the minutes of October 21, 1996, Board Meeting as
presented. The motion was seconded by John Duston.

PARK BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT:
Bill Chase presented a plaque to Rickey .Bort in appreciation of his support to the Parks
and Recreation Department. Rickey has assisted with the last two Kid Fish Fests and
coordinated the police CART team which played Santa Claus & the reindeers and repelled
down from City Hall at our Tree Lighting Ceremony.
DIRECTORS REPORT:
Secretary - Ed announced the hire of his new Secretary, Debra Davis who started work
on January 2, 1997.
Winterfest - The first annual event was held at Independence Park with over 2,000
participants. There was a lot of positive feedback that will help in preparing for next
year's event.
Old Settler's Cemetery - A wrought iron fence and gate was installed. This continued
the previous fence (westward). This project was financed in cooperation with the
Pearland Historical Society. Plans are to have a dedication ceremony in the near future.
Clean Pearland - The annual Arbor Day ceremony was held on Saturday, January 26,
1997 at Heritage Plaza. A tree was planted at Heritage Plaza in memory of Peggy
Mayfield who was a Clean Pearland Board Member. Clean Pearland will assist in the
procurement of park benches, containers and planters for Heritage Plaza.
Staff Training
Amy Andrews, Recreation Center Supervisor, attended the LERN National Conference in
Chicago. We were recognized with two awards: (1) Programming Award - our Youth
Sports Symposium which was held last year; (2) Brochure Design - for our Spring
Brochure Cover.
Kate Brasko, Athletics Supervisor, attended the National Athletic Business Conference.
Ron Paulus, Parks Supervisor, will attend the SW Texas Parks & Recreation. Training
Institute in Lake Texoma. This is considered to be one of the best institutes for park
maintenance.
Nicole Sorrels, Recreation Specialist, will attend the TRAPS Annual Conference in
Austin next month. Other staff members may also attend as we are up for an award from
TRAPS. We will contact the Board when we receive word if we win.

ASA - Earlier this month the Amateur Softball Association (District 31) which we are a
member held its Annual Recognition Banquet. We received a plaque recognizing our
contributions to District 31.
Tree Lighting Ceremony - The event was broadcasted on Channel 13. In most people's
opinion, this was the best one held so far. Santa caught most people by surprise by
repelling down from City Hall and like last year, there was snow. The Chambers of
Commerce recognized the Parks Department at the monthly Business After Hour Meeting
for the most Creative Outdoor award (Decorations).
Winter Registration - To date, enrollment in our programs is 449 plus twelve in tennis
program. Margie is teaching tennis lessons and has a willingness to teach over the next
several sessions.
Youth Sports Symposium - We are holding our second annual Youth Sports Symposium
on Monday, February 17, 1997 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.. Dr. Joel Fish will again be the
guest speaker.
Concession Booth - Tariaz Gourmet was awarded the contract. Tariaz will run a first
class concession operation which includes an extended menu.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Tree Committee will be meeting in about 2-3 weeks. However, no definite date has been
set.
Clean Pearland received the Governor's award (Grant). Landscaping will probably have
to be done in 2 or 3 spots. Most of the landscaping will be done North of Clear Creek on
Hwy 3 5.
David Smith Project - The primary purpose of this project on Old Alvin is water retention.
53 trees will be moved to Centennial Park.
Lisa Diese is the Fund raising Committee Chairman for the 4th of July Celebration.
Letters seeking donations to help fund this program have been sent out.
